Ramla Zareen Ahmad | 584 comments Hi, as you may all be aware, the Goodreads official rating system is:

1 star - didn't like it

2 stars – it was OK

3 stars – liked it

4 stars – really liked it

5 stars – it was amazing

However, not all readers define their rating stars strictly according to the Goodreads system ...and I thought that it might interesting to share our own rating systems here, thanks! :-)

Thall (recantrecantrecant) | 599 comments Mine are, maybe, a little absurd:

1 star: Tasteless.
2 star: Nutella with aloo ka paratha.
3 star: No idea why I rate this.
4 star: Perfection.
5 star: Good.

Osama (0042) | 257 comments Nutella with allo ka paratha doesn't sound bad. As for me, I usually go along with the site's native reading system but for me it doesn't really matter cause I only use Goodreads as a cataloging system.

Ramla Zareen Ahmad | 584 comments @Osama It's been almost an year since I joined Goodreads and there are still thousands, maybe millions, of books that I have read in my life that I haven't added to my shelves so I guess, unlike you, I am not using this website to it's full potential as far as cataloguing the books are concerned. One of the main reasons that I love Goodreads is that it enables me to interact with other book lovers which further leads me to discover 'new-to-me' authors and books that I can enjoy :-) I have made many friends on Goodreads who share my reading preferences but I have discovered that some of them are more generous in their rating than me and may give 3 stars to books that they find merely average while I only give 3 stars to those that I find quite enjoyable ...hence for me, it can be quite useful to get an insight about the rating strategies of other readers :-)

Ramla Zareen Ahmad | 584 comments @Genio Your rating system is definitely creative and interesting ...but I must confess to a feeling of confusion. Was it a typing error ...or do you really define your 4 stars higher than 5? If so, then it's fine with me as everyone is entitled to their own system ...but can you please explain your reasons? Just curious! Thanks :-)

It wasn't a typing error. People always get confused by it. A 'perfect' book executes everything perfectly. The story, atmosphere, lore, themes, and pretty much everything that there could be in a book is perfect or nigh perfect. Whereas a good book is a flawed one, obviously. It may be lacking in one department but what it lacks therein is what it has traded for some other aspect; a good book may sacrifice its lore to accentuate its themes. And with those 'beyond perfect' themes, it inspires me. Yes, a good book is the one that has shaped me in one way or the other. A perfect book maybe the perfect entertainment, but that doesn't mean that it can leave its mark on you.

All the books that I've rated with '5 stars' are those that molded a part of my personality; if not my personality as a whole. Those books weren't necessarily perfect, yet they made their impression.

Ramla Zareen Ahmad | 584 comments @ Genio In some ways, my feelings regarding 5 stars books are quite similar to yours. The books that I rate 5 stars not only excel, at least in my opinion, with respect to writing, characterization, story, ambience, entertainment etc ...but they also touch me at some level. It can be through inspiring me with some message, creating emotional connection between me and the characters or through some other means. In any case, till 4 stars I prioritize books according to how much I like them but as far as the 5 stars books are concerned ...I simply love them! :-)

If only you had not expressed your wish I would have found it a lot easier to read and rate your books honestly.

Now I'll need some time to forget this lol. Also, I rarely read books these days but I will, Insha'Allah, after I'm done with my A levels.

message 14: by Maria (new)

Maria (mariasaleem) | 11 comments Nice thread! Here's my rating system:

1 star: I haven't rated a book worth one star yet but I think it'd have to really suck to deserve that. It would have to be useless and a waste of time (which would be difficult for a book to be...For me, at least. I always enjoy reading so it's never a waste of time)

2 star: bad,with only a few little things appreciable. Again,I haven't rated a book 2 stars yet.

3 stars: Not special. Less good things and more boring/cliché/annoying or whatever things about the book that make me dislike it.

4 stars: Great! Good and original. Enjoyed it mostly, except some small flaws. Awesome but not perfect. (I can describe a 4 star rating easily because I've read a lot of books worth 4 stars)

5 stars: LOVED it! /now one of my favourites

Ramla Zareen Ahmad | 584 comments It's been really interesting to get an insight on everyone's rating system, thanks! :-)

Now one more thing ...my most difficult rating decision is when I have to choose between a 3 stars or a 4 stars rating. On one hand, it doesn't seem right to give a book 3 stars when it's slightly better than the other books that I have rated 3 stars. On the other hand, I can't help feeling that to give it a higher rating would be unfair to those books that have deserved a solid 4 stars on their own merit. During these times, I often wish that Goodreads allowed .5 so that I can rate such books 3.5 stars.

Has anyone of you ever felt like this?

message 16: by Mohammad (new)

Mohammad Raza | 8 comments It goes like this:
5star:The book couldn't have been better(loved it)
4stars:Very nice
3stars:Good
2stars:Acceptable
1star:Shouldn't have read it

Yes,and I usually say it in the beginning of my review. Most people rate a book (the one they wanna rate, for example 3.5 stars) '4 stars' and then mention in bold,'Actual rating: 3.5' or something like that at the top of their review.
