Plot that I remember is: Writer who wanted write a story about sentenced to death person is tricked by prison owner.

Note: He wanted to write about not some concrete person, but any person who was death sentenced.

When did you read it? How was the writer tricked by the prison owner?

Mass market or literary fiction? Any particular genre?

It's relatively old book, maybe 10 years or more...

Writer asked prison owner to temporarily admit him into jail as fake prisoner, because this was only way to know everything about death sentenced people, but suddenly prison owner was changed and writer remained as real death sentenced person. Actually this was trick from prison owner (as it revealed at the end, before execution), for really give feelings and sensations to writer of real death sentenced person.
