SOLVED. (Y)A Mystery/Thriller novel - possum roadkill - main fc with atrophic thumb [s]

I read this one about 10 years ago in a physical copy I borrowed from a friend, it was an adult (possibly even YA) mystery/thriller in the Da Vinci Code style, with some romance thrown in. I don't remember the title nor the author, but I do remember a few details: the main female character had a habit of sucking her thumb excessively as a child, and as a result it resulted in an atrophic thumb, and the protagonist found a possum roadkill at the start of the book. I also recall the two making out after a sports session of some sort.

What country or region is it set in? What makes you say it could be YA - is the protagonist a teenager? How old is her love interest?

I think it was set in the US but I'm not entirely sure.
I really don't remember the protagonists' ages, it was mostly the writing style that makes me think it could be YA.

I believe there was none of that but I kinda remember there was a murder somewhere. I seem to have forgotten most of it, sorry :(
