amg Hello Grimlets! Today we will be recapping chapters 19-20, and finishing the re-read of SECOND GRAVE ON THE LEFT!

This thread is where you can discuss chapters 19-20, but be considerate of any newbies who are reading for the first time and keep your spoilers to a minimum!

Charley, Gemma, their dad, their step-mother, and Uncle Bob all go back to Calamity's for a bite to eat. Charley and Gemma truly seem like they are on their way to a closer relationship. Gemma confides in Charley that it was always hard to be the sister of the amazing Charley Davidson. When Charley protests that Gemma doesn't even look up when Charley walks into the room, Gemma tells her that's because she didn't think Charley wanted her to. Gemma always felt left out of Charley's life. Charley tells Gemma that there are some things she is better off not knowing, and Charley's step-mom agrees that Charley needs to keep that kind of stuff to herself. Charley's dad stands up for Charley and says that her step-mom has always pushed Charley aside and refused to acknowledge her gifts. It's a nice family moment for Charley.

Just then, Strawberry Shortcake shows up to talk to Charley, and tells her to hurry and find Reyes. Gemma actually helps Charley to find Reyes by telling her to close her eyes and just listen. When Charley was young, she would close her eyes and just listen to Reyes's heartbeat, back when she called him Big Bad. She realizes that he's hiding in the last place she would ever look: the basement of her own building. Before Charley rushes off to find him, Gemma reveals that she knows Charley is the grim reaper.

Charley, Angel, her dad, and Uncle Bob run across the parking lot to her apartment building. Charley charges down to the basement and finds Reyes's body surrounded by demons. Reyes's incorporeal self begins fighting the demons, but can't hold them off much longer. These demons are only visible in the dark, and are banished by the light. Charley starts thinking that maybe she can banish them with her light, and before she can do anything more than tell Angel to run, her light explodes out of her in every direction, consuming all of the demons.

Charley has a minute to talk to Reyes while she tells Uncle Bob and her dad to call an ambulance for his body. Reyes still insists on letting his body die. He tells Charley that the demons know where to find her now, and if his father gets ahold of him or her, things will be dire. She is the portal into heaven and he is the portal out of hell. He's about to kill his own body when she jumps in front of his blade and binds him to his mortal body, another grim reaper trick that she wasn't aware she could do until now. Reyes is furious.

Charley goes to the hospital to see Reyes, now that he and his mortal body are stuck together. Neil sits down next to her, and tells her that he's going to write this off as Reyes having amnesia after his coma and forgetting who he was, and not report it as an attempted escape from jail. The state will not let Charley see Reyes.

Uncle Bob and Charley go to Ruiz to exhume the body of Mr. Saul Romero, the man who Hana Insinga is allegedly buried under. Mimi and Hy Insinga hug and cry as the police finally find Hana's body.

Three days later, Charley tries to see Reyes again, but he refuses to see her. Neil tells Charley that he will be okay, he's just angry with her. Charley goes home in tears, wondering what life will be like without Reyes in it. Since he's bound to his corporeal body, he can't even come visit her like he used to (not that he would right now, now that he's so furious...). She goes home and curls up, and checks her email messages. She has one from Mistress Marigold: I've been waiting a long time to hear from you.

THE END!

Extra points for discussion:
1. What else do you think Charley can do that we don't know about?
2. Do you think Charley and Gemma will be better friends now?
3. Do you think Charley's step-mom will begin to grudgingly accept her?
4. What do you think of Mistress Marigold's email?
5. Will Reyes ever forgive Charley?

Angie Bee | 50 comments 1. What else do you think Charley can do that we don’t know about?
At that point in the series, the sky is the limits. Charley tapped into
her abilities for the first time. And we, fans finally got to witness what
Reyes and Angel kept telling her all along.

2. Do you think Charley and Gemma will be better friends now?
As long as they keep the line of communication opened, I do
believe they will remain truly good friends. But what a childish, silly,
disagreement they had over basically nothing.

3. Do you think Charley’s step-mom will begin to grudgingly accept her?
No because Denise is still in denial of Charley’s gifts.

4. What do you think of Mistress Marigold?
I thought she was another Long Island Medium able to
commune with the spirits.

5. Will Reyes ever forgive Charley?
Yes he will in time. He love’s our Charley.
She’s the reason that he breathe.

Boy have I enjoyed reading Second Grave On The Left.
There was so much I’d forgotten!!

I think she is able to do anything a great author like Darynda can think of. I love Charley's character. She's unique.
2. Do you think Charley and Gemma will be better friends now?
I could not imagine sisters not being close since my sister and I are besties. From here on out I think the bond between them will grow stronger.
3. Do you think Charley's step-mom will begin to grudgingly accept her?
Simple, yet complicated answer. She doesn't want to understand her. And wants to. I think she's afraid of Charley.
4. What do you think of Mistress Marigold's email?
I loved it. The build-up was so dramatic. I remember when I read it for the first time I was on the edge of my seat and wanted to know right away about what on earth is going on here! :D
5. Will Reyes ever forgive Charley?
Beneath all his pouty glory.... he loves her too much. So, yes. He's gonna play hard to get for a while, I imagine.... :D
