Without any doubt it is FBI Agent Pendergast in the Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child thriller series. I though he was great in the first book of the series, Relic, and he just got better with each book. I think its because of his unorthodox methods and his very stranger family backstory.
Zifnab and Fizban both wizard from the minds of Tracey Hickman and Margaret Weiss.LOVED the crazy wizard even if he was not a main character. He left his marks in both series and I liked that they were kind of the same person too.
Eddie Dean, from The Dark Tower series, by Stephen King. He goes through an enormous maturation process and is funny as hell. In the fantasy world of the book, he's kind of a representation of the people from our world.
Drizzt Do'Urden, from the long-running series by R.A. Salvatore. A member of a race of outcasts (the Dark Elves), Drizzt faces myriad trials as he attempts to make a life for himself within the societies that despise his kind, and in many cases deal with them by killing them on sight. Quite a saga.
Mark beat me to it haha. Eddie Dean is just the greatest. he's the funny man who had the biggest growth throughout the Dark Tower series. if not Eddie, Jake and Oy (or was it Oi? I can't remember)(same series) and that's just cuz of the ending where I cried like a lil girl. actually I cried that way with Eddie as well
I can't pick one. Two of my recent favorites are Bunny from Donna Tartt's The Secret History and Anthony James of Victor LaValle's The Ecstatic.
I can't pick one. No Ears from Larry McMurtry's Buffalo Girls. Hap Collins from Joe R. Lansdale's Hap and Leonard series. Jain from Tanith Lee's The Silver Metal Lover. Edsel from the Matt Wagner's comic series Mage. Heals Like A Willow from Michael Gear's The Morning River.
I really like Allie from
. She's kick ass and goes through a lot of things in her life that changes her for the better.
Snape, from Harry Potter. One of the most complex and ultimately heroic characters I have ever seen!
There are too many great characters to pick a favorite but I loved Claire from the Morganville Vampire series. We don't see a genius female lead very often.
I agree with Aaron on Snape. He really played jump rope with that fine line between love and hate. Also, Tyrion Lannister (GoT). That one needs no explanation, I feel. The guy is awesome. Adored him in the books and think Peter Dinklage brings him to life brilliantly in the series.
Oh, I love Tyrion! I read the books but my husband only watches the show. Tyrion is his favorite too, and I love watching his terrified reactions to this season.

I would go with Pennywise, though

I find it really hard keeping my mouth shut on spoilers when he theorizes on where the story's going.
Raylan Given's from Elmore Leonard's series of books and the show Justified which feature the character.
