Gary Van Cott I was disappointed that Fiona chose to break up with her fiancé at the end of the book. That spoiled the end for me. I have come to conclusion that most mystery authors are excessively concerned with adding drama to their character's personal lives. I think there can be enough drama in their cases and frequently their relationships with their colleagues to carry a book. It is ok to let their characters be happy once in a while. If the author thought this break up was necessary for future plot lines it could have waited for the beginning of the next book.

Sandy I agree, especially when it comes to characters that are cops. It's not enough that they may have a partner they can't stand & are investigating a grisly murder but they are typically divorced and/or having an affair & have some kind of substance abuse problem. Oh and there's often a DARK SECRET in their past. Just finished reading this & while I enjoyed it, I couldn't help but wish she had a little joy somewhere in her life.

Gary Van Cott Amen! The only books that I have read where the female detective characters are married and relatively happy are those by Deborah Crombie and Helene Tursten.

J.A. Ironside I was also miffed by this. I hope it's not a forever development. I can see why it sort of fitted at the end of the book - being Fiona Grey and Jessica, challenged the MCs belief that she was really heading towards normalcy. And perhaps she felt she would be a burden or could not commit until she knows where she came from. I also think it makes it much easier for the MC to go undercover if necessary in future. It still really annoyed me though. I was also thinking 'for gods' sake let them just be happy for a bit'.

Chris Well, I wasn't as disappointed by this as I might have been, given that she realizes that she's been using him as a crutch. If this had turned into a happily-ever-after-let's-go-plan-the-wedding thing it would still have been a relationship that's more unequal than I'm happy with.

sublimosa Agree with Chris. Let's turn the tables. If you knew your spouse to be had as much attraction to another person as Fiona did, would you still want to go on with the marriage? Never mind that she constantly had to remind herself how lucky she was, how to behave the way he wanted. I don't think a person should have to try so hard to be something other than what they are to maintain a relationship.
If she hadn't broken up with him, it wouldn't have rung true for me. BTW, you might want to put "Spoiler" in the title.
