Jim Cogan (mysticjim) | 1 comments Hello!

I'm looking for volunteer readers willing to give my first book a read and give me some constructive feedback.

The book is called 'The Dirty City' - it's a 30,000 word novella, so hopefully a nice, light and quick read.

Genre-wise, bit of an odd fusion! It's primarily a pulp/noir/hardboiled detective story set in the 1950's, but with a paranormal twist. Essentially, about halfway through you get vampires! I'm definitely aiming it at an adult rather than YA audience, I'd say it owes more to Dusk til Dawn rather than Twilight, so it's not a vampire romance, but I would stress that it isn't a complete gore-fest either.

The story is told purely in first person, so I'd be the first to admit that it was not technically challenging to write and it certainly shouldn't be challenging to read - mainly I was trying to capture a little of the atmosphere of old style hardboiled detective stories, and to try out ideas involving dialogue exchanges.

I'd be sending you the 2nd draft of the manuscript, so hopefully by this stage I've picked off most of the typos and missing words and commas, etc, so I'm looking mainly for feedback on the story, the characters, the structure and overall, whether you liked it or not.

I'm very easy going, so I'm looking for honesty - it is my first effort at writing anything longer than a short story so I've no doubt there will be weaknesses, I'd like to know what people pick up on most.

Alas, I can't offer much in exchange for reading my book. Should I actually publish it then you would certainly be thanked for your input in the book credits, and of course I'd give you a free electronic copy. I'm also very happy to read and give feedback on anything of yours in exchange (assuming we have some common interest in terms of genre).

Ideally I'd like to find a few people whose opinions I value that can work with me going forwards as I write new stuff as well and get a bit more serious about it all.

Please reply or PM me if you're interested and we'll have a chat about setting something up.

many thanks for reading

Jim
