Heavyreader, do you remember what sorts of magical things happened?Any fantasy characters like dragons, troll, witches, etc?

Was the book for adults or teens?

This sounds somewhat like The Deed of Paksenerrion trilogy, the first book is called the sheepfarmers daughter.

These were fantasy novels, set in a quite distant past where people road horses or walked to get around. There was quite a bit of magic involved.
The main character was female, youngish (late teens, early 20s?). She is poor, of humble background. She starts off on a quest, but I can't remember why. Much adventure ensues, but I can't remember any in particular.
(view spoiler)[Somewhere along the way, she ends up with a magic necklace, only she doesn't know for quite a while that it is magic. Magic things keep happening to her, but she doesn't associate the magic with the necklace for a long time. (Even I figured it out before I did.)
At some point, the main character is captured by bad guys, tortured, raped, killed, but transcends her earthly body and comes back in some form. I remember specifically that she was raped because the whole scene made me squeamish.) (hide spoiler)]
