It starts off by telling us the Veradis is travelling to Ripa his hometown, in the company of Nathair. Veradis has been named Nathair's first sword, and captain of the growing warband which Veradis is still flushed with pride at. He longed to see his fathers reaction to the news that Veradis has risen high in his short time at Jerolin.
They made camp before they reach Ripa, and Veradis notices that Nathair is jerking in his sleep. Suddenly Nathair burst into motion, grabbing Veradis' throat, squeezing violently. As Veradis tries to prise the fingers from his throat Nathair realises what he is doing and releases his grip. Veradis mentions that he heard Nathair say the words 'searching' and 'cauldron' in his sleep, and Nathair informs Veradis that these dreams are common.
The next day they reach Ripa. Another character is introduced, Alben, Veradis' sword master. He takes Veradis and Nathair to Lamar, the Baron of Ripa, and Veradis' father. Ektor, Veradis' slightly older brother is with Lamar, often known as the scholar of the 3 brothers. Lamar greets Nathair and Veradis, and offers them rooms to refresh themselves in. Veradis asks his father if he should see him later but Lamar dismisses him, and Veradis is visibly hurt. We learn that Lamar's coldness towards Veradis is due to the fact that Veradis reminds Lamar of his late wife, who passed away during childbirth to Veradis.
It ends with Alben telling Veradis that his father had a fierce look of pride in his eyes when he informed Lamar of Veradis' first sword appointment.
A fairly short chapter, but it gives a lot of information about Veradis' feelings about his relationship with his family. It seems he is like any son, always seeking to impress his father and make him proud. It will be interesting to see how Lamar acts around Veradis' when they speak in the next chapter.
