I think the phrase that comes up multiple times in the book "purple waves" is a clue. Everyone who either has entered or entering the Westing House says something to do with purple waves. What do you think it means?

The word 'waves' itself is one of the clues. And word spread fast about Turtle's dare, which involved 'purple waves'.

And on page 32 it says how Sydelle Pulaski is wearing a purple dress with wavy stripes and how her hips are defined and wavy. I think this also contributes to the clue, what do you think?

It was simply the guests misinterpreting the clues. The correct phrase, of course, is "amber waves."

Mr. Hoo naming one of his specials something like "sea bass on purple waves" was very funny, though.
