Clara 1-At this point in the story I didn’t love Jaime like I do now because he was still an asshole. But reading how happy he was because he was out of his cell made me happy this time. Brienne and Ser Cleos were with him, and he is really cruel at times with Brienne, calling her lady and wench and just making fun of her. That’s one of the reasons I didn’t like him.

2-Jaime was in fetters, while Brienne carried weapons, and he wonders if she can use them. Catelyn let him out, and she ordered the men in Riverrun to open the gates. Cleos had new terms now, which I guess are exchanging Jaime for the girls.

3-I liked Jaime thought what Tyrion would say if he knew Jaime slept during his escape, he was pretty drunk too. I loved Brienne told him to stop calling her wench, that’s not her name, and how he said he was Ser Jaime, not Kingslayer.

4-Ser Cleos was the son of a Frey and Genna, Tywin’s sister. Ser Cleos is clearly different from Jaime, and he thinks he’s not much of a Lannister. I don’t remember much of Genna, but I think she’s different than Tywin. Cleos’s father chose to join the Lannisters, not the Starks like his father did.

5-Catelyn made Jaime say he won’t not hurt any Stark or Tully, and that she’ll have her daughters back, and they’ll be safe. Just when he was telling her how much vows he made in his life. He realised Catelyn trusted Tyrion to give her her daughters back. So, Brienne was taking both Jaime and Cleos to King’s Landing. She had to take Jaime to Tyrion, not Cersei. I forgot Brienne called Jaime monster quite a lot, and how she didn’t want to talk to him. But Jaime wanted to, he was locked for a long time, without talking to anyone, which must be quite awful.

6-Jaime was making fun of Brienne, and was being cruel at times. I forgot Cleos kept asking him to be kínder. We learn some things about Tarth, and it does sound beautiful, and it was called Sapphire Island. I never thought the way the island is called would be important later.

7-Jaime knows men talk behind his back, very few dare called him monster like Brienne did. It was brave of her. I forgot Cleos thought all Catelyn said, about Bran and Cersei was a lie. I also forgot how Cersei told Jaime he never thinks, and it was quite interesting. I think he is smart, but he’s one of those people who never think before doing something. I also forgot he fucked Cersei after throwing Bran, like it was nothing. He thinks Cersei would have asked him to kill the boy, and that she didn’t send the killer, it was way too clumsy for her.

8-Jaime asked Cleos for a knife, and he realised Brienne feared him, even when he was in fetters. Well, who can blame her, he’s a legend practically. Having a bald head and a filthy yellow beard was a good idea, although he is well known, and not everyone has his eyes. He didn’t want to be seen in chains, I think that says something about him.

9-He looked himself in the water, and thought he looked older and his face was thinner. He thought Cersei will hate he doesn’t look like her, which says a lot about both of them and their relationship.

10-Aw, Jaime thought every rock and tree was a wonder. He was a long time without seeing the light of day. While they are in the Trident, he thinks of how full of ships and people it was before the war, and how different it was now. It kinda surprised me the first time I read it, I, like Brienne, thought he was pretty much a monster. He complimented Brienne for her knowledge, and I don’t think she believe him, after all he was being mean with her most of the time.

11-They saw corpses hanging and the crows eating them, and I really like Brienne went over them to bury them. She said true knights wouldn’t do a thing like that, and Jaime’s reply was interesting in my opinión. Maybe he doesn’t believe in true knights, like Sandor. When he read “They lay with lions”, he told Brienne it was done by her side, and it was something the Lannisters used to do. Cleos said it was an inn before, so they were tavern wenches. He doesn’t seem to care about them. Jaime said, after learn about Bolton being in Harrenhal, the Kingsroad and the river were watched. I wonder how much he knows Bolton though.

12-Brienne told Jaime she was as good as him when it came to fighting, she must know she is good, but saying she was as good as him was saying a lot. I am saying she’s not, but he’s described at being maybe the best, so it was a big thing to say. Lol at Jaime’s comment about the Rainbow Guard.

13-Brienne climbed the tree so she could later bury the bodies, and then she jumped, she saw a ship, so they went back to the boat. I wonder how they got the boat in the first place, if it was in the chapter I missed it. Jaime could tell they were Tullys, so, they sent for him as it was expected. And of course Jaime didn’t want to go back to the cell, he just got out. Interesting how he thought Tyrion could think of something clever, but he just thought of going to them with a sword in his hand. Clearly that’s the way he used to resolve things.

14-He told it was a river galley, and they wouldn’t be able to outrun it, or fight the 18-25 men in the galley. Jaime thought the best they could do was die with a sword in their hands. He was never afraid of death, and this made me think he would rather die than go back to the cell.

15-Omg I forgot he thought Brienne was the Hound with tits. It was kind of an interesting comparison, and I thought about it a while. He kept telling her to free him so he could fight, or defend him herself. I forgot Jaime hated archers, maybe because he fought at close distance.

16-The man commanding the galley was Riverrun’s captain of guards, Ser Robyn Ryger. The galley was pretty close, and Jaime never lost his humor while they talked. He told Ryger about how Catelyn let him go, but he said Catelyn didn’t rule, which is true. Even if she doesn’t, the gates were open for them to go.

17-Jaime, like Catelyn, could tell hos pretty Brienne’s eyes were, and how determined she was. She jumped in the water and started climbing a Cliff, and I forgot why until I read it again. While she was doing this, Jaime told Ryger to solve this with a single combat, but the captain of guards knew better, and they would rather take him back alive if posible. Brinne threw rocks from the Cliff, which is so badass, and she must have strength to do so. The galley started to fill with water, and they could escape.

18-When Brienne got back to theit boat, instead of hitting her with the oar he had in his hand, he helped her into the skiff. I think at this point I started wonder if he was that bad, he had no reason to help her, yet he did. Brienne told him she meant to take him to King’s Landing, which shows she took her vows really seriously, and maybe that’s why she kept calling him Kingslayer and talked about true knights.

Vicki Kalb | 310 comments Jaime is one of my favorite characters in the series and is one of two characters that managed to turn a complete 180 in my opinion of them. :)

Your point 4, I don't remember if there's much information about Genna, but I assumed she was much kinder than Tywin.

Your point 18, I agree, the first time I read this chapter I started to doubt how bad he was too. It's a start for his conversion to good guydom. :) But I still think he was weighing his odds of success. He would have a harder time getting out of his fetters all by himself, and he's cocky so he probably thinks he can overcome her when she frees him.

1. Jaime is obviously alive, not killed by Cat, and he’s free! I can’t imagine how good it must feel for him to be out of the dungeons after being cooped up for so long in the darkness. He’s enjoying the wind in his hair and birds in the air and he laughs like an idiot drunk on sunlight. Brienne is with him, as well as Ser Cleos Frey, his cousin. Though he’s in a boat he’s still manacled together so he doesn’t try to escape.

2. As it turns out, Catelyn let him go, despite not having permission to do so. She had Brienne overcome the gaoler, help him up the stairs and into a boat, hidden in a traveler’s cloak, and sent down river in the night. Catelyn has always done her duty...except this time! He slept through much of the boat ride in the night. I love this: Tyrion is going to laugh himself sick when he hears how I slept through my own escape.

3. Jaime offers to help Brienne row the boat if she unshackles him but she’s not falling for that. They bicker from the start; I just love these two together! He keeps calling her wench and she keeps calling him kingslayer. Ser Cleos reminds Jaime to be polite and Jaime thinks there’s not much Lannister in him. His father, Emmon Frey, lived in terror of Lord Tywin since he married his sister, Genna, ha! But though the Freys took Riverrun’s side, Emmon Frey and his children stayed on his wife’s family’s side. Lord Tywin is such a bully...lol. They are both awful Houses, in my opinion. Not all, but most.

4. Interesting Catelyn wants Ser Cleos to deliver her new peace terms to Tyrion, not Cersei. Before she released Jaime she made him swear more vows. Hmm, if he didn’t swear then she’d kill him. Well of course he’d make promises! He wonders what the High Septon would feel about the sanctity of his vows made while drunk, imprisoned, and at sword point. Good point! But Catelyn has more faith in Tyrion to keep his word than in Jaime’s, who has a guard with him at all times to make sure he gets to King’s Landing safely, just in case.

5. In Jaime’s point of view, Bran was spying on him, so he didn’t seem so innocent to him. Even Cersei yelled at him for pushing the boy out the window, so that part really is true.

6. When Jaime makes fun of Brienne, calling her Lady Brienne to Ser Brienne, Ser Cleos tells him to stop, but that only makes Jaime make fun of her people living in Tarth, too. What a bully he is at this point in the series! Ser Cleos shortly later sucks up to him, though, saying no Stark could ever win against Ser Jaime Lannister’s sword. Except...they did. What a sniveling two-face.

7. They open sail, having only the Tully red and blue colors available, so that’s a big red flag if anyone, in particular Lannister loyalists, should see it. Or even worse, Stark loyalists.

8. Jaime has Ser Cleos shave his head bald, leaving the beard. This will help with his disguise. It also rids him of all the mats and lice in his hair, ew. He looks considerably older now. Interesting how he knows Cersei will hate it. You’d think she’d be happy just to know he’s alive!

9. The rivers along the Trident are the fastest way to trade goods in the riverlands. Lots of wares are sold in “floating shops” and along the shores. Gods, I love this image! Right now, though, the war has the rivers all abandoned. There are no villagers in any village they pass. Brienne passes the sandbars and snags with ease and Jaime actually compliments her, but she is suspicious of him. No wonder. Sometimes he can be an ass.

10. They come across a huge live oak tree with a bunch of dead women hanging from it, swaying from its branches over the water. Brienne is appalled and stops to give the women proper burials. While they’ve stopped, Jaime enjoys bathing himself in the water. He offers to help get the corpses down if she unchains him, again. He must think she’s stupid. As they get closer, there’s a sign that says these women died because they lay with lions, so this was Stark’s side. Ser Cleos recognizes this place and says it used to be an inn. They were tavern wenches. Jaime says it’s Bracken land. Jonos Bracken may have done this out of retaliation when Tywin Lannister burned his castle down. Ser Cleos debates with him on who else could have done it and the Boltons are mentioned. I wouldn’t be surprised with Roose Bolton. Seems Jaime did not know Bolton holds Harrenhal now.

11. Brienne starts cutting the corpses down when she sees another boat sailing their way. All three hurry back in their boat and sail away. The other ship sails the Tully colors as well. That’s not good. Riverrun will be wanting their prisoner back. They have to hurry. Lol, Jaime jokes saying they should hope the noble Tullys will stop to bury the dead whores. As it gets closer they realize it’s a river galley, bigger than a boat. They have more oarsmen so they cannot hope to outrun them.

12. Jaime suggests they kill them. They’d been rowing since dawn; they’ve got to be tired. If Brienne unchains him he can help fight. Lol, he just doesn’t give up. He’d rather die with sword in hand than be back in prison. Brienne reminds him he’s under her protection. She can’t let him die. Lol, Jaime thinks she’s the Hound with teats.

13. The galley gets closer and Jaime can see they have archers. He hates archers. They are close enough now to see the captain is Ser Robin Ryger, a tenacious old man. Ser Robin shouts he’s been sent to bring him back, of course. Jaime explains Catelyn freed him in order to exchange him for the girls but Ser Robin reminds them that Catelyn Stark doesn’t rule Riverrun. When they don’t yield they shoot arrows at them, two pierce their sails.

14. There is a large island in the Red Fork. Brienne makes a daring move around the left of the island, by far more dangerous, and Jaime can tell she’s determined, only now noticing her pretty eyes. She gives the tiller to Ser Cleos and jumps into the water. The first time I read this I had no idea what she was doing. She scales the bluffs on the north side.

15. Jaime asks Ser Robin for a trial by combat but Ser Robin says he wishes he could but he was given direct orders to bring him back unharmed. Just as the archers get ready to shoot again, Brienne rains rocks and boulders on them from above, puncturing their hull. Men fall into the water and can’t swim for some reason, odd, if you live in the riverlands. Jaime is elated to see the galley foundering and hopes they lose Brienne as well, but she is not that easy to get rid of. She runs alongside the boat and gracefully jumps into the water. Brienne is a total badass! Jaime thinks to hit her with his oar as she pulls up but instead finds himself helping her back in. I wonder why. He could’ve easily knocked her out in the water and overtake Ser Cleos, except then he’d still be in chains, lol.

16. Jaime asks if she expects him to thank her but she says no; she swore an oath to safely get him back to King’s Landing. I really liked this chapter. :) Brienne shows Jaime what a true knight is all about, and she’s not even a knight. Often the good guys in this series aren’t knights.

Clara Jaime is one of my favorites too! Who is the other character you think changes so much? I have an idea, but maybe we think differently.

Oh sure, I don't think he helped Brienne just to help her, he needed her. But, it's a start!

About your point two, you are right, this time she didn't know her duty! Good observation Vicki!

About your point 15, I found it all too they didn't know how to swim. But I was born in a city with sea, and I know how to swim because I love it, but I know many who don't like the sea and they have it right there. Maybe just those were the ones who didn't know hot to swim. But, you would think they know how to, since they have the river there.

Clara I thought so! I really like how he changed too :)
