PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments In other news...I was a glutton this weekend at a library book sale. 20 books for $5!! I got a large part of a cozy series by Sarah Graves. Anyone read her?? I'm not ashamed to say that I will be going to an even bigger sale next weekend. I'm going to have to get a bigger house!

Ashamed? Are you kidding?! Go, Nicole, go!! :-)

I recognize the name but I'm not sure if I ever read any of her stuff.

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments She wrote the Home Repair is Homicide mystery series. I think they might be a bit older.

Bought myself my (early) Christmas gift. Agatha Raisin DVD, 1 season! Received B&N discount coups and couldn't wait. Free shipping, discounted fairly low price. Merry Christmas to me. lol

message 355: by PugMom (new)

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments I got the B&N coupons too! Not sure what I'm going to buy. That sounds like a nice gift for yourself! I am thinking of using one of the coupons to get my friend a book that I think she'll like for Christmas. I just have to look on her Goodreads account to see if she's read it!

message 356: by PugMom (new)

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments OH, and i went to another book sale today and it was a total let down! The prices were way higher than most other library book sales AND there was a very limited selection. They did have a "signed by the author" table but nothing appealed to me. I did pick up a Sherlock Holmes Mystery Puzzle for my husband as a Christmas present so it wasn't a total waste of time.

Nicole, I love receiving the B&N coupons. I usually head to Ammy, make price comparisons and most often, B&N comes up a better deal. With free shipping and discount off B&N membrsp., I usually save 5 to 8 dollars at B&N.

Did a similar holiday thing for a friend. Couldn't decide 'tween Girl On/Train or Things/Cease To Appear so I bought her both. LOL

Perhaps the deals are a bit dried up as many are doing their holiday shopping too. Around this time of year, if I find a good deal, I need to jump on it for if I wait and go back, it's gone.

Happy Holidays...shopping!

Masthead photo not exactly as I imagined but I don't think there's an option to center photo like FB and others have available. But I like it better than a blank. Still open for some of your fave pics that will work for The Parlor. Please post your photos and we'll pop up whichever ones fit our theme. :-)

Wow, that was fast! My Agatha Raisin DVD came in in three days from placing order to delivery and that was w/free shipping. I find B&N much faster than DeepDiscountDVD. The latter takes forever!

Anyway, I'm enjoying the Quiche mystery but wow, the changes from the book. Besides most glaring being the actor who plays Agatha, there are a few more who took me by surprise. Mrs. Bloxby is young compared to what I envisioned, her husband also different. Wong looks similar to that described. Mr. Lacey lots younger than I thought and Roy Silver brings male lover with him on Aggie's investigation.

Then there's her "cottage." It is not at all as I pictured. I envisioned more of a Miss Marple's digs but Aggie lives in a larger, more modern appointed home. They picture a quaint cottage from outside but it doesn't fit the indoor shot. The village is pretty much in keeping with the story though.

I'm liking it enough as I love Agatha Raisin but once I'm done with DVD version, I will go back to picturing the way I had while reading the series. I've last book to read to complete the series, canon. Hope there's more books to come.

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments I saw a preview of the show and was really put off with how Agatha looked. I think I'll just read the books. I should finally be picking up Pushing Up Daisies from the library this week. I got the new Hamish Macbeth book from Netgalley so I'm looking forward to reading that also! I'm actually surprised that I got it since I was denied when I requested Pushing up Daisies. I have so many books to read!! Yikes!! Thank goodness I have several days off for Thanksgiving break then over a week off for Christmas break!

LovesMysteries | 327 comments How are the Hamish Macbeth books? Are they good? Are they set in modern times or in period?

Tina (tinacz) | 6103 comments Mod
Nicole, Yeah, I was disappointed w/the movie Aggie but I think I know the reasoning for this. If they're to film full series or even most of it, it usually takes more than a year from securing budget to final edits and then promo, distribution so they probably needed a younger Aggie to be able to age along with progress of filming. If they got an older woman, she'd not be able to stay w/series more than say, three, four episodes. Like any of the later Marples. I'm guessing, anyway.

I like them. They are a bit different from the Agatha books and are set in modern times but in a VERY rural area of Scotland so the accents are interesting to say the least. Very quirky characters and I find that I read these books even more quickly than the Agatha books.

message 364: by J (new)

J Didn't the group read and discuss a Hamish Macbeth?
I really need to keep better records!

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments If you guys read Hamish previously it must have been before my time.

I'm not too keen on the Hamish series. Maybe it was as I started series with Christmas themed mystery which was centered around stolen Christmas lights. Unless I read wrong, that was it. Christmas lights.

Now, the movie Hamish's were pretty good but short lived. They stopped making them when it could've gone on for a while.

Warming up to the Agatha Raisin film adaptations. The first episode was a bit to get though only as I didn't get what they're doing. As I watched the bonus material, I get where Ms. Beaton is coming from and I kinda like the younger Aggie...in film, anyway. Though, while reading the books, I will picture our traditional Ms. Raisin. Wonderful to have two treats in one: Traditional Aggie and 2016 Aggie.

message 368: by PugMom (new)

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments I'm still thinking of doing the one month trial of Acorn so then I'll get to see the episodes. I just have so little time to sit and watch things nowadays.

Because you PI's love a good puzzle, I ask that you don your deerstalkers...backwards is okay. Anyway, I'm "launching" an ad campaign of sorts for a show cat and I'm trying to think of cost effective ways, vehicles by which to do so. As freeway and roadway billboards are out of reach (physically and monetarily), I'd like to find low, no cost ways to do that by. Any impressions, feedback, please post. No opine too silly or small. Thanks.

message 387: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool | 992 comments Are you meaning to get the cat to you, or to get you to the shows?

message 388: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinacz) | 6103 comments Mod
Jill, to advertise a print, ad campaign, e-mag postings or interviews, anything to do with promo, mktg. I'm doing this mostly by internet, Jill. I don't go to the shows or hang with the cat and owner. It's a family member I'm doing the PR stuff for.

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments I found myself at the library booksale again! I donated 2 bags of books so I figured I'd restock my shelves. I picked up 6 books. The first book I zeroed in on was The Monogram Murders by Sophie Hannah. I've been wanting to read that!!

Please tell me how you like/dislike The Monogram Murders. I've been very cautious of reading it since it doesn't bear Christie's name.

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments Recently, I've been listening to non-cozy audiobooks. Mainly thrillers. I figured I needed a change of pace here and there. Anyone read thrillers? Who's your favorite author?

I liked it. Have to read Closed Casket in the new year. Author's coming to do a televised interview around the 7th. I'd like to go but it's a bit of a drive and I'm sure seats are going fast.

I like Stuart Woods but I'm not sure if he's thriller, suspense whatever but he def. doesn't write cozy material.

message 399: by PugMom (new)

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments I'm not sure what the difference is between thriller/suspense but I guess I like both. Right now I'm listening to Lisa Jackson's Love You More. I have liked some of Harlan Coben's books and also Ruth Ware.
