Multi-voice audio books?

I am currently listening to Last Orders with 6 or 7 narrators. A group of English gents on a road trip taking their mate's ashes to the sea. Love it!

There were a few light novels produced with audio versions featuring multiple narrators portraying character voices (English anime voice actors)







Unfortunately, the experiment seems to have been a failure as we haven't gotten any more Monogatari or Galactic Heroes in Audio form. Especially sad for Galactic Heroes since it had 3 volumes released for people to get used to in audio form, and now there's just no option starting with volume 4. =[

I have listened to several multi-voice and full cast audiobooks and I think they're rarely any good. I instantly think of it as a negative. You often get voices with no chemistry or some good narrators mixed with a bad one or two.

One of the few exceptions that come to mind is World War Z.

in my opinion it depends on the production/producer more than the voices. I have listened to a few multi and full cast audiobooks. My only issue with multi-voice audiobooks is when they have the narrators doing each other's parts. For example if it's a guy and girl. Nothing annoys me more than having the girl do both voices and the guy doing the same voices a different way. They should just pick one to do each character not have both doing them in different voices. I came across this example in a recent audiobook I listened to earlier this year. is the perfect example of what I hate about multi-voice audiobooks but is a good example of why I like them.

I have mixed feelings about it. I thought the narrators were pretty good. This is one that made sense because of the different points of view. It took me a while to get into it, but then I figured out it was a caper story about getting someone or something out of somewhere that seemed impossible. That I enjoyed. Supposedly this is YA and the characters are all very young but they seem to have a lot of history and expertise. Some readers were bothered by inconsistencies of the technology, as it's sort of steampunk but suddenly something more high tech shows up. That didn't bother me, since hey, it's fantasy anyway. I think my main annoyance was that I didn't realize it was part of a series. So after the caper, lots of things still aren't resolved. I didn't like enough to get the next book.
