I was stunned at the darkness of the rape when I went back. I am surprised that teenage me wasn't shocked enough for me to have retained that part.
I'm in the middle of the second and I'm also surprised by how dark it is. Not only that, but by how strongly I react to it. I'm not sure if it's because of how empathetic I can be or how well she describes those scenes.
Hi Michele,Thanks for this heads up.
I have the trilogy but don't plan to read the second and third books for a while. Other S&L books to read first
But on the basis of the first book and the comments about it being a YA book I was thinking about getting a copy for my niece. I am now not so certain that would be a good idea as she is young and I don't think I want to expose her to these kind of concepts.

Also I felt some might want to know there will be torture, rape (not graphically described), suicide, and death.
I've seen the thread about this being a YA wish-fulfillment girly fantasy - and book one may be a little of that - but some dark crap happens, and it has realistic consequences.
