Nostalgia | 1 comments I'm looking for the name of a book read by the teacher to my grade 4 class.

I remember the story centering around a child (boy?) who I believe ran away from home to live in the woods. I remember the character using a bow to hunt and I remember specifically venison. The main character could also have been an orphan but I really don't think so.

I'm sorry for the lack of specifics and appreciate any help.

I'm not sure about the bow part, but he did get venison.

Jordan (freemajo) | 40 comments Can you give a time range of when you read the book? You might also have more success if you change the title of this post to "Boy runs away from home to live in woods" etc.

I agree that it sounds like My Side of the Mountain. My Side of the Mountain (Mountain, #1) by Jean Craighead George

There's also Hatchett by Gary Paulsen. He specifically talks about making a bow, but the main character is a boy stranded by a plane crash. My 4th grade teacher definitely read this to us.

Justanotherbiblophile | 1814 comments Good job Lobstergirl, I totally ignored this the first time around.

I too, third _My Side of the Mountain_, and note that it has a sequel.

Deer meat was gotten by hiding another hunter's kill (super dangerous, get your head blown off by a redneck by playing in the woods!)

But I think he also had a bow.

But perhaps you may remember the part about living in a tree, and getting / raising a falcon?
