I think I could probably manage other types just fine. I'd be hesitant to write a romance/erotica, simply because I'm not sure how I'd tackle hot and steamy scenes without feeling like a complete perv.

Maybe hard science SF... maybe... though only because I lack the scientific background. The day I do extensive reading on string theory or whatever else strikes my fancy, then sure.

Really? MG is way too tame for me. YA would allow for coming of age stories, and that I might do. Though for now I'm confortable with adult fiction only.

Ah, boy fiction :) I can't write that, but I enjoy reading it.

Not so much. How many times did Nancy Drew stop to fix her lipstick?
I kid. There are many exceptions. I'm thinking RL Stine as a good example.
Hard scifi would mess with my perfectionist nature, Romance/Erotica eludes me on how to keep it interesting for folks since I'm not a huge fan of either and I'm not sure how I would apprach children's/MG in a way that would be fun for me and appropriate for readers.

I'm a bit like you, Kyra, that romance has a cameo at least in my books though it can be a little melancholy since I'm a dark fantasy/horror author mostly :p

The one thing I know I can't write is erotica. While I play with erotica, I'd never be able to write a piece with the intention of publishing. I hate the descriptions that erotica writers use. I taught sex ed for many years and I find I want to be scientifically accurate - no cutesy names for body parts here.

Seems to me scientifically accurate would be a good thing. Maybe emotionally accurate as well, since we've been missing that in recent years.

I have to disagree, sorry to be argumentative, but I know I'm not alone in this. I can't stand sex scenes, or action scenes for that matter, regardless of genre, that are scientifically accurate. I'm adult, I already know where babies come from, thank you.
I perceive an opposite problem. Trying too hard to be accurate that the fact the characters are living breathing beings tends to get ignored. I feel that scientific accuracy for sex scenes in fiction would have the opposite effect, and end up being completely unrealistic. People don't think in scientific terms when they're intimate.
Having said that, I completely agree that all the sexual euphenisms are a bit much for me to read and often makes me gag. But, that's going to the other end of the extreme.

I really hate stories that are actually good but so interrupted by the sex scenes that you no longer care. I can't remember what the series was but I was reading one that had greek gods as characters. Each story continued from the one before except they focused on a different "coupling". Literally, there was a chapter that ended - he walked into the dark alley. The next 2-3 chapters were about a different character having sex. I was so mad that after I finished that book, I didn't continue the series.
I, also, hate those who feel that loving sex will cure a rape victim. I really liked The Drake Sister's series (too much sex but it didn't kill the story) but the last book was such an insult. The main character is brutally raped (while kidnapped so the rape went on for weeks) and it was graphic. But her boyfriend cured her by forcing her to give him a blowjob. (sorry for the tangent)

@Lily I don't mind penis, cock or any other words they use as long as they alternate between different words (even member, shaft and so forth). Then it will remind me of a child who learned a new word and repeats it to anyone who's close enough to hear it.
(Yeah, a good way to kill the mood. :P)

I couldn't agree more about repetition! A definite mood killer.

Personally, I don't mind a little sex in my stories. However, I will skip over excessive sex scenes if I am interested in the story. If the sex is over half the story then I just can't do it. And it happens. I find that sticking with YA is the only way to find books I can tolerate because adult books use sex as a way to fill the pages.
My stories rarely have a full sex scene. More often than not, I elude to it because you don't need more than that - there's more to the plot than the sex.

Age doesn't have anything to do with it. On average, though there are exceptions, women prefer reading erotica, instead of watching a porn. It's entertainment, extra to add to one's sex life, it's not a substitute. Anyone who thinks it is a substitute, will be disappointed.
I have no problem with writing erotic elements if that's what the story needs, but I still don't like the word penis lol

Judy Blume wrote about sex in her YA books. As far as I can tell, the newly invented category of NA has more to do with fanfiction inspired novels, though I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's the main reason.

I did get a few Harlequin - mostly in their teen series. I know that they are famous for their sex scenes which I knew going into their books. For those, it wasn't the sex that was a problem but the characters. I got three in a row where the main character was a female over 25 and a virgin. While that is also not a big problem but none of them had any problem jumping into bed with the main male character. (I'm trying to be brief but the end result was burnout for me.)

Sorry - I feel like I've hijacked the topic.

Sara, take it easy, give yourself a rest. I've had a few reviewers thank me for not giving them the same old thing. Those gems aare out there.
