Addison Baffert (addisonbaffert) | 2 comments Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling is a laugh-out-loud memoir about Mindy’s efforts to find peace and enjoyment in her life. Prior to this book, she has written the New York Times bestseller Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and is the creator of the television show, The Mindy Project. Each essay in her novel includes the same comical aspect that is evident in these works, which are humorous confessions on her life in the spotlight and the experiences that come along with them. Whether it is an awkward encounter with Bradley Cooper or explaining what one should bring to her dinner party, Mindy’s comedian background shines through.
Throughout the book, Mindy does a great job of making it read as though it is just a casual conversation between two friends. Each chapter offers a new story or situation about friendships or romance, as well as a piece of advice on topics ranging all the way from body image to success. My favorite quote comes from the last chapter which discusses where her confidence comes from. “I have never, ever, ever, met a high confident person and successful person who is not what a movie would call a 'workaholic.' Because confidence is like respect; you have to earn it.” Her honest and witty remarks create a sense of familiarity that leaves the reader thinking and in the end, wanting more.
All in all, Why Not Me? is an excellent read for anyone ages 15 and up. Mindy’s ability to keep things light and fun is what makes this book so appealing and easy to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a nice laugh or an honest piece of advice.
