I do, usually if you take a guess it is instead of asking a question and you are essentially asking the question "Is it this book" in its place. Just like the questions, it is narrowing down the choices. It serves the same function.

It is fascinating that we all reached the same conclusion about the options!!
I'm curious - was anyone tempted by option 2? We were for a little bit. :)

The deadline for submitting your guess has now passed.
Unfortunately no teams were correct with their guesses, but watch out for some intelligence I may be able to share *teehee*
Guesses are now all recorded on the weekly spreadsheet

WEEK 3
GONDOLA BATTLE
Summary
Instead of asking a question this week, each team will need to pick 5 different clues about their cover to give to their opposing team.
If a cover is discovered, then the team gets a new cover and their can't be guessed again,.however, they can continue trying to guess other teams.
If a team is successful in guessing a cover during the battle, they will be assigned a new opposing team and receive new clues (to a maximum of 5 over the course of the battle)

BOOKS & GENRE TO READ
For week #3 all teams get a reader’s choice genre.
How this works:
If all team members read the same book genre – 15 points
If not all team members read the same book genre, but at least 45% of team members do - 10 points
If all members read a book – an additional 5 points
The points for a correct guess at a cover remain unchanged at 15 points
NOTE: Banked books can be used towards the genre, but not towards “all members read a book”
The Specifics
• Each team will be assigned their opposition 24 hours earlier than usual to allow for team planning which is Thursday 29th May, 8am Sydney Australia time (click here for the countdown)
• Each team must choose 5 different “clues” about their cover to give to their opposing team. These can only be selected from the existing 15 questions and answers available on the Official answers spreadsheet. These must be different from the questions that have already been asked to your team.
• The five “clues” must be submitted to NBRC Book Ninja 24 hours later (click here for the countdown)
• Starting Saturday 31st May, 8am, Lisbon Portugal time (Click here for countdown) Ninja will give teams their first “clue” of the opposition’s cover. A clue will be provided every 24 hours until all 5 clues have been given.
• You can tell me your guess at any time after receiving your clue within that 24 hours - until you receive the next clue. Once that 24 hours has expired, you will get a new clue and a new chance at a guess (so if you get one clue, and forget to guess, you will get a new clue, but only one guess – you can’t then get two guesses).
• If your team guess correctly, you will be assigned a new opposing team and have another chance at guessing a cover correctly until you have received 5 clues. (For example, your team guess correctly TEAM A after 2 guesses and receive 15 points. You are then assigned TEAM B and will have up to 3 clues and 3 guesses to try and get another 15 points. HOWEVER, if all covers have already been guessed, you will not be given a new team as each team’s cover can only be revealed once.
NOTE: The deadline for having books marked as "read" has not changed and is still Friday's at 8pm Lisbon, Portugal time. (click here for the countdown)

I assume that you can't use a question your team was already asked as a clue?

You are right, the clues need to be ones your team hasn't already been asked

If there's a loop hole.....

as the subtitle was not included on the answers spreadsheet.
In response...
You are quite right, we had accidentally omitted the subtitle from the spreadsheet. I have now updated the answers spreadsheet to show the full title and the correct answers.

I'll answer over on the genre thread

Captains
We found it took quite a while to do all the checking for week 1, so we have learnt our lesson and would like to ask for your help for this week.
Please help a ninja out and
*Set up a separate thread in your group with the books you are submitting for the week including who in your team read them
*Clearly state which books of those books are for a genre, and which ones are for banking
*Please please please include hyperlinks to the books and your team members shelves
This will help speed things up on our end to be able to give you the points and results for the week. Thanks!
Remember: The deadline for having books marked as "read" has not changed and is still Friday's at 8pm Lisbon, Portugal time. (click here for the countdown)
You have about 21 hours from now to submit your information

June 2nd is the birthday of one of the Ninjas. To celebrate, we're going to give you all a present: another clue/guess!
However, the Ninja sometimes gets naughty, so there is a catch. meaning you have to choose one of the three options below:
1. Guess at any team of your choice, and if you are correct you will receive 15 pointsChoose well, since the option can lead you into the right direction to get the cover.
2. Guess at your opposing team after receiving a clue about which row of books their cover is on, and if you guess correctly you will receive 5 points
3. Guess at your opposing team after receiving the category of BOM (YA, Anything Goes or Adult Sci-Fi/Fantasy) their cover is, and if you guess correctly you will receive 10 points
You have until the last clue is delivered - June 4th at 8 AM Lisbon time - to let the ninja know your choice.
NOTE
If all covers are UnCovered by the 4th, the Ninja will grant the choice between options 2 and 3 for the new covers.
However, guesses at new covers will ONLY be allowed if there are no books to UnCover at the time.

BANKED BOOKS
Between now and the end of the challenge, you can use your banked books in the following ways:
➜ DOUBLES
Match two banked books by genre to be able to take a guess at your opposing team.
➜ MASQUERADE
Create an alliance! Match one of your banked books with the SAME book that was banked on another team. This gives BOTH teams a chance to take a guess at a team of your choice
Important Notes
★There is no limit to the number of guesses you can take each week using banked books, but each banked book can only be used once
★ Team Medico della Peste has 7 members whereas each other team has 8, so for that team only, they can use the books read each week by NBRC Ninja as a banked book (These are NBRC BOMs) for DOUBLES only
★ When matching books by genre, it may only be one of the genres listed in the rules
★ You can match books read by the same person, provided they have been allocated as 'banked'

Also, if a banked book is used to get extra clues, does that negate our ability to use it to fill a genre requirement in later weeks?

Ninja, is there a place where you list which category of BOM the book belongs to? I've looked at a couple of the discussion threads. For example, the ones for Poison Princess and The Diviners but the threads do not indicate if the discussion was for YA or Anything Goes (I'm assuming they're not Adult SFF).

Yes, that is right - one banked book per team member per week (these are listed on the weekly update spreadsheet) ;
and yes you can only use each banked book once. So your choice to use it towards a genre, or so use it to gain a guess

Unfortunately some of the other BOMs it doesn't say in the thread, you're right! But I've gone back and checked the nomination threads and Poison Princess was Adult Sci-Fi/Fantasy and The Diviners was YA

It starts now, so you can start using any of your banked books from week 1 and 2 if you want to

I went through the polls and figured out where the books belong. My one question is Carnival of Souls. It's the March BOM, but according to the poll (poll #56), The Fault in Our Stars was the winner for YA by one vote over Carnival of Souls. So, should I consider Carnival of Souls YA?
Thank you!

With masquerade, both teams have to agree to use the same book? Or do we just read a book that matches one of the other teams' books?

I think it would be unusual for a team to not agree to this as it is quite an advantage to only have to use one book and get a guess at a team of your choice ;)

I *ahem* tend to make lists... anyways, I searched the polls for the category of BOM for all the books and Poison Princess won for Young Adult (Poll 65/Dec 2012). So are we going with the nomination of Adult Sci-Fi/Fantasy or the Young Adult winner from 2012?
(view spoiler)

I have realised my mistake. I was looking at Firelight for someone on a different thread and I posted what the Firelight category was *shakes head*
Poison Princess was in fact YA
We do intend to put all the categories onto the answers spreadsheet, but work is preventing me from doing that quite yet. So I'll use your list as a base and get to that tonight (in around 11 hours) unless my portugese self gets there earlier :)

Apologies. Yes, please use Nichole's list for the moment and if there are any changes I'll let you know :)

At first blush, however, it seems as if none of the banked books match.
Are we able to read a book this week, which will be banked, in order to form a "Masquerade" alliance with another team? Or can this only be done with existing banked books?

At first blush, however, it seems as if n..."
You should be able to read a book that matches, but you probably want to make sure the other team will keep it to match with yours and are not using it on another double. Both books have to be used for the masquerade was the answer to my previous question.

WEEK 3 choices for banked books
The Gondola Battle points system:
If all team members read the same book genre – 15 points
If not all team members read the same book genre, but at least 45% of team members do - 10 points
If all members read a book – an additional 5 points
Therefore, if a team decides to all read the same genre they will receive 15 points and no banked books
If a team would rather, they can have 45% of the team read the same genre for 10 points, and bank the other books (to turn into guesses)
I'll make an announcement about the countdown to week 4 soon confirming this

Basically, a team can choose to get an extra 5 pts by all reading the same genre, or bank books to be used later.

Yes, that's right

Exactly :)

We want to take a guess after receiving the birthday clue. If I guess wrong, can I then use the "bonus" banked book guess? Or does the "bonus" guess need to be submitted simultaneously?

Yes.
Both guesses are independent.

Yes Sarah, that's a good idea and I will allow it
