NBRC Book Ninja | 1025 comments You could get up to 25 points if both guesses were wrong by:
* team read a book of the assigned genre for 10 points
* 45% of team read a book of assigned genre for another 5 points
* ALL team members read a book for the week for another 10 points

On the genres listed, how exact do they have to match?

For example:
You have Mystery-Cozy listed, would a book on the shelf Cozy Mystery still work? And the other subgenres, historical romance, historical mystery and so on.

Also, for the categories that are together (Biography/Autobiography, Humorous /Humor, Spirituality / Inspirational), it can be either or, correct?

ok i confused myself a bit.. So if one member of the team reads a book of the opposing team's genre we get 10 points. If 45% of the team reads that genre we get 15 points? (10 for 1 member + 5 extra)

So if you get a "no";
and at least one team member read the assigned genre you would get 10 points
and if at least 45% of the team read the assigned genre you would get another 5 points
and if ALL members of the team read a book for the week you get another 10 points

So you are right that you get 15 points for having more than 45% of your team read the genre

I hope that helps? :)

message 114: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancyhelen) | 1469 comments Can I clarify a couple of things in terms of our reads this week?

1. How do we let you know about them? Do we add them to our secret group's bookshelf, marking them as read? Or do we need to submit them to you?

2. If we are adding to the bookshelf, is it OK for us to add all the books we read this week, or is it best just to add the ones we want to go towards this week's point allocation?

3. How many books of other genres are we allowed to bank?

4. If we want to bank a book - lets say we're reading HF this week, and two of our team read SI - does that mean those two SI books can't count for our total of everyone reading one book?

5. Am I just confusing myself? :-S

message 115: by NBRC Book Ninja (last edited May 19, 2014 03:40AM) (new)

NBRC Book Ninja | 1025 comments Sure NancyHelen :)

1. This is up to you. Some captains create a new discussion thread in the secret group just for posting books, some set up spreadsheets, others just message me the detail. All I need is every week by the deadline the books you are submitting on behalf of your team that week and why (i.e. readers choice, banking)

2. In terms of notifying me, I would just like to you to let me know the books you are submitting for the week

3.As many as you like. So, in terms of example:
You have 7 team members. For maximum points for week 1, you need:
* 4 x readers choice ; so you need to select the genre that the team is reading this week and let me know the genre you chose and the four books, from four different team members that are marked as read
* 3 x anything else. So if every team member atleast reads a book you get maximum points, so these 3 books can be of any genre. You need to decide what books are best to "bank" (generally those with lots of different genres listed to give you the most flexibility). I do not need to know the genre of those books you are banking - you can use them at a later stage and pick the genre then

4. Hopefully 3 answered that. To be clear, yes those two SI books would count

5. probably... lol!!

I hope I have helped. Yell out if you need some clarification

message 116: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancyhelen) | 1469 comments Thank you - yes, you've definitely helped...

message 117: by Marla (new)

Marla | 1803 comments Oh, this sounds tougher than Battleship. I don't want to penalize my team if I can't read the right book and they don't get the 100% bonus. Wait, does everyone on the team have to finish 1 160+ page book or one in the team genre (RC if Yes answer; picked for them if No answer).

If the answer is read any book, I could do this...do you still need players?

message 118: by NBRC Book Ninja (new)

NBRC Book Ninja | 1025 comments Hi Marla - only 45% of the team to need to complete a book, so you can certainly still join. I have 2 possible spaces still.

If you could just let me know:
1. The number of books you read a year.
2. Your top five favorite genres from the ones listed below (and what were designated in Book Bluffs’ Battleship).

message 119: by Marla (last edited May 22, 2014 09:51AM) (new)

So a banked book can count for this week's everyone finished a book AND also used another week for someone's book for particular genre but not for that later week's everyone finished a book? Does it only counts toward everyone finished a book in the first week when it was banked? So if you use a banked book, you would not be getting the everyone read a book bonus, when it is used the 2nd time? Or are you saying that you can slide any book read during the challenge time period to a later week so long as it's only used once during the challenge? Or any books read for the week but not used for the 45% genre can be banked. But we do have to specify the title of the books being banked each week?

Maybe just show me an example of points for a team using a banked book and banking a book.

The Battleship people may understand banking books, better, sorry if I'm the only one confused.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments Do we post our finished list of books somewhere? Or are the mods tracking them too in the team threads?

You can either start a new discussion thread in your private group with a finished list (some of the teams are doing this, and closing the thread for new comments so it is *only* used by the captain to post finished lists), or send them to me via message

Thanks. Also, do we need to list the genres for banked books or can we wait until we use the book as a banked book to determine what genre?

message 123: by NBRC Book Ninja (new)

NBRC Book Ninja | 1025 comments You can wait until you need a banked book to decide the genre TC

I've given this a shot. I think I'm confusing myself too... haha So happy to take input if anyone thinks something here is awry

Example
Team of 3

Tracy
Alyce
Nathalie

Week 1
Team is going for 30 points

How?

Team asks a question of opposing team and gets a "yes" answer gains 5 points
Team read a book of their choice for another 10 points
45% of team read a book for another 5 points
ALL team members read a book for the week for another 10 points

Team gets a "yes" answer (5 points)
Reader's choice - team chooses F

Tracy reads F (10 points)
Alyce reads F (>45% of team reading F = 5 points)
Nathalie reads SI (As SI is a 'tough' genre for this team, they decide to bank the book. No points for banking)
All team members have read a book = 10 points

Week 1 = 30 points

--------------

Week 2

Team ask a question and get a "no" answer. They are going for 25 points:
Team asks a question of opposing team and gets a "no" answer gains 0 points
Team read a book of opposing team choice genre for 10 points
45% of team read a book of opposing team choice genre for another 5 points
ALL team members read a book for the week for another 10 points

Genre team is given is SI
Using Nathalie's banked book SI (10 points)
Alyce reads SI (>45% of team reading SI = 5 points)
Tracy reads CBS (They decide to bank the book. No points for banking)

Nathalie reads HF (must bank the book as one of Nathalie's books is being used this week for genre ; no points for banking)

All team members have read a book = 10 points

message 129: by NBRC Book Ninja (new)

NBRC Book Ninja | 1025 comments It depends on if you choose option 1 or 2 from the special announcement

If you choose option 1 then your team can ask Arlecchino a question, and then take a guess at their cover after receiving an answer to your question
If you choose Option 2, your team just take a guess at Alecchino's cover and then you can guess at ANY team's cover after seeing all of the teams questions and answers

Thanks for the example, but I don't know if I get it yet. Doesn't that mean that you get credit for reading one book twice? SI book read in week 1 as a everyone finished a book and then banked. SI book used toward assigned genre and counts toward everyone finished a book in week 2.

message 135: by Kimberly (last edited May 22, 2014 07:45PM) (new)

Kimberly (poweki) | 1713 comments Marla -

The SI book was read by Nathalie in the prior week and banked, i.e., not used for genre points in the prior week.

In the subsequent week, Nathalie's SI book was retrieved from the bank and used to accomplish that team's requirement to read the SI genre.

However, since Nathalie's banked book was used, and she can only put forward one book per week, her book read in the subsequent week must be banked.

Does that make sense?

message 136: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (poweki) | 1713 comments P.S. - the requirement that everyone on a team read ONE book per week to get those points is a separate calculation to the counting books for genre.

Each team member can only put one book into the kitty each week. But, if everyone on the team does read a book, then those books, in essence get credited twice. But ONLY if the whole team reads a book.

In the above example - if Nathalie's banked book is used but she does NOT read a book in the subsequent week, then I **believe** that the team would not get points for the whole team reading a book in that subsequent week.

If I'm wrong, I'm sure I'll be corrected. :)

message 137: by NBRC Book Ninja (new)

NBRC Book Ninja | 1025 comments Thanks Kimberly, you are perfectly correct!

CAPTAINS - You have about 15 hours to let me know:
*the books you are submitting for points for week 1 (You may want to set up a thread in your group to list these). The books must be marked as read between 16th and 23rd May inclusive.
*the decision on going for Option 1 or Option 2 as per the special announcement
* the question (or guess) you will be asking your opposing team
*the genre you are allocating.

Countdown until all books for the week must be marked as "read" and Captains need to submit information to NBRC Book Ninja

You will then have to 24 hours to submit your guess as per the week 2 special announcement.

message 139: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments Ninja - for those that chose option 2 , on the second round in this week, will all teams be able to see what book was guessed at by other teams and if it is right or wrong book for that team? All though I am assuming then you would have to assign the team a new book real quick by the second round if their book is guessed correctly in the first round. Or do other teams never know what guesses are made by other teams and the answer.

Will this affect our 24 hr time frame because I would like to confirm that the mods have the same answers as to which books are part of a series as me before telling my team which covers we should consider for our guess.

For Week 2 only as per the special announcement, Captains need to submit their guess (after seeing the questions and answers). This has been delayed to Sunday 25 May, 8am, Sydney Australia time.Click here for the time in your timezeone
