I've signed up and volunteered to Captain so I want to make sure I understand everything.Your example:
25 points
How?
Team asks a question of opposing team and gets a "no" answer gains 0 points
Team read a book of opposing team choice genre for 10 points
45% of team read a book of opposing team choice genre for another 5 points
ALL team members read a book for the week for another 10 points
So, essentially, If I am with Team B with 5 members, and we ask Team A a question and get a "no" answer, Team A assigns us the genre Fantasy.
If 1 of us reads a FY book, we get 10 points. If 2 of us read Fantasy, my team gets an extra 5 points, right? Even if the other 3 team members read nothing at all?
Ideally, all 5 people read something for the maximum 25 points in this case.
Maybe I'm not asking this correctly. I'm confusing myself!

Correct. If the remaining team members atleast read one book for the week then you would also get another 10 points.

OK, Karen, sorry for asking again, but I was looking at your post #21:With the 45% it is to try and keep things fair if members suddenly leave a team (unlikely in a short challenge, but does occassionally happen). So it would be 2/5, 3/6, 4/7
But now you are determining that for 5 people, 45% would be 3? (Technically it's 2.25 when using Excel, but I was a liberal arts major!) :-)

and are *very* close to posting!
If team b correctly guesses team a's book (say, in week 3), does team a get a new book or are they now "out" of the challenge?
I need to understand the whole banking books idea. This is not clear to me. And when we bank a book, can any of the genres it qualifies be used later? And when we use a banked book later don't we still need to read another book that week?
Hi SarahBasically you need 45% of your team to read a certain genre each week for maximum points. So the remaining books can be "banked".
So, for example, this week you read a FY. But your team needs HF.
Your captain may then declare your FY "banked" for future use. So in a forthcoming week if you need FY you have one 'ready'.
As with battleship, each person can only have one book per week count so if you did use your banked book that week, any other book you read that week would not be able to be used.

You can always ask for help to answer the other teams questions.
Just want to point out NINJA that in battleship a book read that week counted always, one book per team member per week, even when a banked book was used. So if a banked book was used to cover a hit the person's could still read their weekly read and get another sloop or pair up for a salvo, so if a banked book is used couldn't we still have our weekly book count to bank as another book or use toward a genre?
What time on Friday do we need to post questions? Can it be any time in the morning so that answers can be given by afternoon in order to have time to find genres? It doesn't seem to me as much of a imperative to have a post at a certain time to try to get there first in this game. Just early enough to give teams time to answer and get the genres the need to read for the week. For example, have question anytime before 11 and answer/genre by 2?

You just can't use the same genre on the same team (even if they didn't have to read it the first time)

Because we don't have the same number of team mates on all teams I think it may give an advantage/disadvantage if we allow for a banked book from a member AND a new book from that member to be used in the SAME week.
So if you use a banked book from yourself (Sarah) this week, then the book that you do read can be banked for future weeks.
There are no points for banked books at this stage, they are more just there to 'help out' if you get a tough genre.

The points are mismatched in the point examples message (the 25 and 20 point examples).Does reading a book assigned by the other team give us 5 or 10 points?
That was intentional to have more of a disadvantage to not guessing correctly. However, on reflection, I think to keep the scoring simple I will make it 10 points to read a genre assigned no-matter what has happened in terms of guessing/answering correctly.:)
Great, thanks! I knew the reader's choice was 10 points, I just didn't know what to tell my team about the assigned genres. I've been running in circles and confusing myself all day :D. lol

We consider this as male author as that is how the book has been marketed.
It would be the same concept if we had a book listed by Ilona Andrews which is a husband and wife team, but the pseudonym is female, so we would consider it a female answer.
It is ok if you don't agree, but this is Ninja's official answer to ensure consistency for all our teams :)
I assumed the questions, answers and allocated genres would be made public so we can use this information to plan our next weeks question and make sure we don't double up on genre allocations. Will this be posted somewhere once everyones questions are in?

Ok, I think I understand most of this - but what I don't understand is when we find out what our book is that the other team is asking questions about. (sorry, bad grammar!). But hope you understand the question.

Is there a rule regarding children's books in this challenge? I was surprised to find a couple of my planned books with the tag of "children's", and before I start plotting, I would like to make sure I know if there was a rule in place and make sure I know the standards before deciding on which books to use each week. Thanks.
Is it still OK to have started the book earlier, but finish it this week? I have a book I would like to count and want to know if I should start over since I am not too far into the book yet.
Tagged as "children's" is ok provided it is more than 160 pages (and not a children's picture book!)TC - it is the end date that counts :)

i was wondering Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close has been listed as bestseller by 13 people would that count as Current Best Seller or not because it doesn't say current?
Sorry Stephanie, but shelved as "bestseller" doesn't count. It needs to be a “Current Best Seller” wherever you are, and this can be from a variety of sources (e.g. Barnes and Noble, Amazon etc.) provided you can give us a link showing the list :)For example: book depository best sellers
i'm not sure how the book depository best sellers works exactly, i put in the name of the book and if it come up it means that is it a best seller? if there's nothing found it's not?this is what it says

If you search for that book, and click on it, you will see under "sales rank" it is 2,501So although book depository consider their bestsellers as a list of 1000, this one is outside of that. Sorry Stephanie!

For week two only we are offering teams a special deal!
You can either:
1. Ask your allocated team a question AND
Take a guess at their cover (after receiving an answer to your question)
OR
2. Take a guess at your allocated team's cover AND
Take a guess at ANY* team's allocated cover (after seeing all of week two's questions and answers)
Oh... decisions... decisions...
*You can not "guess" your own team's cover!
Note: the second question is a 'bonus' so whether your team is allocated a genre or can do 'reader's choice' is based on the response to the first question you ask.
