You might try A Thread of Grace. It is a good read about WWII.

I would recommend A Thread Of Grace, even without reading it first.
Chris wrote: "Hi , 1st post on here . Never read any Ian Rankin, suggestions on what to start with ?"I have only read 4 or 5 so I am probably not the best person to answer. I started with the first book of the Inspector Rebus series - Knots and Crosses - but then skipped around. Knots and Crosses is a good starting point and a very good mystery.
I am bored with standard fiction, can anyone recommend something quirky?
Greg, I'm not sure how you define quirky. Perhaps a few of these will interest you:Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal OR Island of the Sequined Love Nun
Amnesia Moon
Waiting for Gertrude: A Graveyard Gothic
Infinite Jest
Bad Monkeys
Greg, also: Welcome to Goodreads and this group. I hope you enjoy the experience. Your "To Be Read" list is going to grow exponentially. You'll hear of so many good books here.

Infinite Jest is a must-read for another time.

IJ is a must read. I still have my copy and might re-read it one day.I forgot to mention on of my favorite surprise finds:
The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O.
It's so fun to read.

At 750 so pages, it might be too long for me.

Red it. It had to be red, still I didn't loved it!

Greg wrote: "I am bored with standard fiction, can anyone recommend something quirky?"Hi Greg it is hard to recommend things when you don’t have much on your shelf. Perhaps add a few more titles that you’ve enjoyed and malmené even make a shelf called “quirky”.
It’s mainstream but quirky The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

It reads fast. It's fun. It's quirky. I still recommend it; if not to you, to anyone else who may be interested.
If you gave us some parameters of what you are looking for, the suggestions would be more beneficial to you. What sort of books have you read and liked?
How do you define quirky?
Nutshell is quirky if you consider a story told by a fetus quirky.
Greg have you tried Jasper Fforde ? The Eyre Affair I thought this was so funny but it took a bit of mind bending to get my head round at first.
