hi Stephanie, I have resonantly discovered YA books your son may like Hatchet series. Just finished them in the last couple of months and thought they were really good. Hope to be reading Frankenstein in the next couple of months as I have set myself the challenge to read 26 classics over the next year.

Welcome, Shaheer!

That seems like a good range of book genres to choose from.

Happy reading!

message 1155: by Sandy (new)

Sandy (scribingshadows) Hey everyone. My name is Sandy, I live in Cayman Islands with my husband and cat (whose name is Oreo). I've lived here all my life except for 3 years when I went away for school so I have lots of family here. My main book loves are YA but I also love middle grade (usually fantasy) and adult (usually paranormal) but I will also read light contemporary, steampunk, romance and am now (after listening to the Book Riot and Get Booked podcast) have been gaining interest in non-fiction particularly biographies, feminist fiction, and food memoirs.

message 1156: by Gemma (new)

Gemma (gemmamountain) I'm not sure if I ever introduced myself to this group or whether I just jumped in and started looking at the discussions you guys had going on!

Anyway.... Hi! My name is Gemma and I'm 33 living in West Yorkshire, UK. I love reading and will read pretty much anything as long as it is fiction, although I'm not overly fond of sci-fi/fantasy. I've been a member of Goodreads for a while now but I'm only now trying to join in and from the look of a lot of the challenges etc I'm joining the party a bit late for 2016 so I will have to keep an eye out for 2017, although if there are any to jump on board with now let me know?

Anway apologies if I'm repeating myself and if not I look forward to getting involved.

:)

message 1157: by Janine (new)

Janine | 1546 comments Welcome Sandy! Is Oreo a black and white cat? That strikes me as the perfect name for a black or black and white cat!

Welcome Gemma! You can jump into any of the challenges anytime. For the yearly ones, just set a target you think you could do in the last four months. Otherwise there are monthly challenges, so you could start straight away with a September ones. Or there are quarterly challenges - a couple of new ones will start for Oct-Dec :)
I've only been in this group since the start of the year, but one of my favourite things is how relaxed it is. There's no minimum requirement for challenges or number of pages etc. and you can join in whenever you want!

message 1158: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments Welcome everyone!

Gemma, as Janine says there's no bad time to jump in. There's monthly challenges and quarterly. Or if you just want a book goal that's perfect too :)

message 1159: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2 comments Hey everyone, my name is Katie. I currently live in Oklahoma, but I'm from Northern Virginia. I like to read fantasy and other fiction mainly, although I do add in some non-fiction from time to time.

I decided at the beginning of August that I haven't been reading enough books recently, and set a goal to read 52 books by the end of the year. So far I'm 20 books in, so if all goes well, I should be able to hit that goal.

Welcome, Katie! I also joined this group because I had not been reading much and I set a very similar goal last year and exceeded it! I think you will find this to be a wonderful group where you can relax and enjoy books!

Jennifer Barstad (maidenoflight) | 326 comments Hiya! You can call me Jen. I reside in Wisconsin and have been married for 7 years. We have 2 girls, ages 5 and 3. Oh and I love watching football, especially the Packers.

I enjoy reading as much as watching football. I am not too picky of a reader, but my fav's are fantasy, thrillers and mysteries. I have been challenging myself to read more of other things though. Hopefully the challenges in this group will help with that goal.

I found out about this group from a member in another group i'm in. I have looked at some of the challenges you have and plan on working on some of them before the year is up. Just have to figure out which ones I want to work on.

Tran Hiep | 4 comments Hi everyone!
I'm Hiep (I know it's difficult to pronounce my name; so you could call me "Jet" - my English name), I come from Vietnam.
I'd like to read science, nonfiction, travel, fiction.
I hope that I will reach the reading goal in this year with 15 books. Especially, some books that I have to read in this year are The little prince (Antoine de Saint - Exupery), the road (Cormac Mccarthy), Moby Dick (Herman Melville), To kill a mockingbird (Harper Lee) and Jerome becomes a Genius (Eran Katz).
And I'd like to make friends with others who love reading. Honestly, I wish to receive your recommendations about great books.
Thank you!

Blagica | 12941 comments welcome to the group Jet we are happy to have you. how many books have you accomplished so far?

message 1165: by Tran (new)

Tran Hiep | 4 comments @blagica I'm glad to see your comment. For last 2 years, I read about 20 books including many kinds. In this time, I recognize that reading is more important than I used to think. So, I set the reading goal for this year is reading at least 15 books. I have to read classic books.
What's about you?

message 1166: by Susan (new)

Susan Hagan (susanhagan) | 1 comments Hi All - i am a reading bee and relatively new on goodreads. I almost read a book a week. I recently discovered the "groups" feature on goodreads and would like to be part of discussions on the great books to discover recommendations. I am very interested in quality writings - pretty much all genres except romance/ horror/ erotica - no offenses to anyone :)

I have recently read two great books that i can recommend. Please get good recommendations my way and i am sure to read them and respond back to you with my commentary :).
Coinman: An Untold Conspiracy - Excellent Humor/Satire book with hints at philosophical aspects of life
The Kite Runner - Great fiction on Afganistan's political turmoil!

i am looking forward to many book friendships here. Very excited!

Susan

Tran Hiep | 4 comments @Susan: Hi Susan. Nice to see your message. I finished reading The Kite Runner in the last June. It's a great fiction! I love Hassan and his son that are brave people but they couldn't change their life because of the war. I hope that the boy will become a normal boy with many happiness that he's worth to be received.

Lucia Sandoval Hi everyone. My name is Lucia, I'm from Los Angeles, California.

I own a hair salon, and on my spare time I am reading as many books as I can. I like all type of books, I just love reading. I've been trying to read about a book a week.

Looking forward to making new friends.

message 1170: by Zariena (new)

Zariena Hello Everyone,

My name is Zariena (zah-ree-nah).

I've always been a sporadic reader but since my husband is away due to his military obligations; I've fallen in love with reading books.

I enjoy reading sci-fi romance novels (my favorite is J.R. Ward) and thriller/horror books. I'm currently reading In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware.

I'm so thrilled to have started the challenge! My goal is to read 20 by the end of the year. I'm 4 books in at the moment.

Mary Pat | 2186 comments Welcome, Zariena & Lucia! This is a great group of readers! Enjoy!

message 1172: by Renee (new)

Renee (reneesnap) Hi, My name is Renee.
I've been a reader as long as I remember but i've been in a reading slump for the past 3 years of my life basically and I'm trying to get back into loving reading and being passionate about a story once more.
I don't have a genre preference but I am picky about writing styles. I cannot stand when authors have long, detailed, irrelevant narratives in their novels. Basically, I just like anything fast-paced and something that can keep my attention.

I'm planning to aim low since we only have 3 months left of the 2016 year and I've only read 7 books so far, so I hope to read at least 13 books total this year. I'm lowballing myself because I am also an english major so I don't want to aim high and not be able to reach my goals because I'm too busy reading for school and studying.

Blagica | 12941 comments hello Kate welcome to the group! there are so many of us who dip into so many genres you are bound to make tons of friends! welcome to the group we have tons of challenges up and running feel free to jump in!

message 1174: by Melody (last edited Sep 28, 2016 12:44AM) (new)

Melody | 1 comments Hi guys!

I'm Leigh and even though I signed up in GR in 2013, I felt like I'm a newcomer haha. I usually log in and input the things that I read and I never really surfed what's in here. And whoa I missed out a lot of activities in GR (for 3 years? arrgh).

I'm somehow eclectic in my tastes when it comes to music and books.

I'm curious about eroticism (not the smut) thus my journey towards that simple yet powerful piece of erotic literature continues. In romance department, I am looking for those books that I read in High school days just to see if what I felt then (while reading) would be the same (but i know it will never be the same feeling again he he).

I like mysteries, thrillers, not much about horror though. I admire auto/biographies too. I like manga hehe, I like war books, and I indulge in children books sometimes.

Nowadays, I like reading Chinese novels (translation) but I don't think that I've seen some of the C-books here in goodreads, the reason why I can't mark them as "read" :-( I'm planning to read as many Filipino books that I can and I hope that they are listed here too.

Nice meeting you guys! And happy reading everyone. Mwah..!

I love reading and my favourite genres are teen fiction, spy/action, romance and anything recommended.
I look forward to the group reads, making new friends and perhaps doing buddy reads if anyone is interested :)

message 1178: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1 comments Hi! My name is Linda. I live in North Carolina. I love psychological thrillers, mysteries, historical fiction, true stories, biographies, fiction, and thrillers. Some romance, but not much. My goal this year was 47 but I have already beat that! I'm reading Natchez Burning. I just started this today and I can't put it down. I love to read new authors. I would love for you to add me as a friend.

message 1179: by Karoline (new)

Karoline Lien (karolinelien) | 47 comments Hi! I am from Norway.

I love reading books set in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

I don't remember how I found the group, but I really like all the challenges - and I want to try and participate in some of the yearly ones. I am joining quite late, and so my reading goal for the year was only 12 books. I am so amazed with the amount of books people read per year. I hope this group can help me read even more!

message 1180: by Khairun (new)

Khairun (kyun2701) | 17 comments Hi. My name is Khairun. I'm from Brunei. I do read most genres but this past few years I'm in mood for YA, supernatural/fantasy/magic and romance genres. I prefer series to standalone novels. And of late, I also read chinese online novels (ongoing translated ones).
As for my number of book challenge for this year, it's 120 books of mixed genres and I'm almost reached my goal^^, only need few more books and I'm done. (But i think I already pass my goals if the chinese online novels are included in.)

message 1186: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthais) | 93 comments Hi all,

I'm Martha from London. I have quite a mixed taste in books, the only thing I'm not really into is horror or chick lit, otherwise I'm up for trying it!
My original goal for the year was 35 but I started a job where I'm commuting on the train every day, so I hit that pretty quickly and now have put it up to 100.

I found your group as I love reading challenges, so looking forward to getting stuck into a few of those :)

message 1187: by Zoë (new)

Zoë Neo | 214 comments Hi I'm Zoe and I'm from Manchester/Cheshire in England :)

I'm not a very picky reader and I'll pretty much read anything, but I do tend towards YA, fantasy books and chick-lit. My reading goal for the year is 20 books as I am not a particularly fast reader (plus up until June I was finishing my final year of university so I knew I wouldn't have much spare time for reading). So far I've managed 17/20 as I've picked up the pace a lot since September so looks like I should definitely hit my goal :)

I found your group via a friend on here who was already part of the group. I have been on goodreads since 2014 but didn't actually realise there were groups on here!

message 1188: by Blagica , Challenges (new)

message 1189: by Gayatri (new)

Gayatri Hello. I'm Gayatri and I am from India. I am new to Goodreads and loving it more and more every day! I like reading different sorts of books but Fiction, Mystery and Romance top my list. I have never read a book of horror genre before but I intend to read The Shining very soon. Also, I have recently started reading simple German books too, to improve my German. I have temporarily set my reading goal as 30 books and I hope to achieve it before December. Would love to get book recommendations. Thanks.

I'm still trying to familiarize myself with Goodreads.

Denise (deezl) | 58 comments Hi! I'm Denise. I'm from Faribault, Minnesota and I mainly enjoy YA books. For example I love the lunar chronicles and the selection series. I want to read more thriller books for example I found out I enjoy Gillian Flynn's novels so much and would like to find more like hers. The Butterfly Garden was also out of this world. I would love to find out more books like that also. I have another goal to read a few Stephen King novels. I've only read Cell but I seem to have a hard time keeping interest in any of his other books. I heard about this group on this very website.
