Introduce Yourself to the Group - 2016!

Where are you from?
USA (North Carolina).
What kinds of books do you like to read?
Sci-fi/fantasy is my go-to, and I've read a lot of young adult based on recs from my friends.
How did you find our group?
I was searching around for some inspiration for some of the categories in the Popsugar Reading Challenge, and one of the results led me to a thread here. This group is perfect for me! I read SO MUCH and I'm always up for challenges.
What's your reading goal?
I've started the year at 300. Last year, I read 500, but half of those were graphic novels. I'm not putting as much pressure on myself for the number this year, but I'm looking for more challenges to read in new genres. So this community is perfect!

I am an avid reader but have found over the past couple of years, I have been reading mostly in the summer months and succumbing to the various tv shows in the fall/winter.
I have decide to set a 50 book challenge for myself to get back to my first love, reading year round.
I normally enjoy fiction but am open to all suggestions. I often find myself wanting to discuss a book after I have read it but have nobody to discuss it with. I thought this would be a good website to do so.
I have just started my fourth book of my 50 book challenge and am enjoying every minute!
Looking forward to meeting fellow avid readers.
cheers!

I'm Steph (Stephanie, but prefer Steph) from the Gold Coast, Australia.
I've decided to join your group because I want to meet like minded people, hopefully get great book recommendations and want to set myself reading challenges.
My reading has been quite Westernised, mainly only reading books published in England, USA and Australia, so I am keen to expand my library to include other Countries and cultures, so I thought by joining a group with a variety of people from all over the world I would have greater exposure to some amazing books I've never heard of.
I love all book genres and try to leave myself open for anything, but the books I like to read the most would be dystopian fantasy or end of the world type books.
Reading goal is 40 books for 2016. I'm really interested in doing the Popsugar Reading Challenge.
I am excited to be a part of what looks like a very warm and welcoming community. I'd appreciate any recommendations for any genre. :)
Thanks!

I am happy to read anything except horror and romance, although my favourite genre is historical fiction.
My reading goal for this year is 30 books, although that may be revised at a later date. So far with three weeks of the year gone, I have read 4 books so I am well on target!

I found your group by accidentally clicking a link.
Trying to read 40 books this year off to very good start.

I would love to set a target of reading as many books as I can, my hectic schedule permitting... but the goal is not in the numbers but in the variety and choices I will be making. I would like to read books from different cultures and genres that I have not read so far and also try literature on and off... so I will be also taking inspiration from what the wonderful people in this group are reading.
Happy to be part of this group!
Happy reading!

My name is Lucia, I live in Germany and I am a student of English and Literature. I've always loved to read, especially fiction (mostly fantasy), but I'll read just about anything I can get my hands on. I haven't read as much as I would have liked last year, mostly because I've been struggling with depression (I'm still struggling, but getting sort of used to it?).
I'm going for a book a day in 2016, but secretly hoping for something around 500 (if I can afford it ;)).
Happy reading!
[EDIT: I'm also doing the BookRiot Read Harder Challenges for 2015 and '16 this year]

i'm tonks/kathi from austria. I studied translation and am a big fan of everything language-related
I read almost anything, mostly fiction i'd say.. i'm maybe not that into historical things but it's really hard to say AS I try everything out
this year i want to at least read 50 books, although i may up that to 55. and i also want to read a wide variety - genres, cultures etc.

I look forward to having suggestions made for the more obscure genre's. I am also going to use the Challenge to read some of the books on my tablet if I can, as I have always felt there is nothing like having an actual book in your hands and being able to hear and smell them, that probably sounds weirder than it should :)
So 1 down all the rest to go. Happy Reading :)

That doesn't sound weird at all :) If you're looking for books out of your comfort zone, you could always try a reading challenge (like the one bookriot is hosting). I'm doing the Read Harder Challenge 2016 and already found some surprisingly good books that I probably wouldn't even have picked up otherwise :)

Cheers,
Tom

I love to read all kinds of books, but I'm especially fond of historical fiction (particularly the WWI/WWII era) and dystopian novels. I also love a good tearjerker! Pretty much if a book makes you think and evaluate how you personally view the world, it's right up my alley! I joined this group to help motivate myself to read more. I used to read a book every day or two, but as I've gotten older, I have to remind myself that reading is more important than facebook and whatnot. My goal this year is to read more, to evaluate if the time I'm spending it really being utilized in a positive way. I'm excited for all the recommendations!

I will pretty much read almost any genre but I do really enjoy young adult fiction, particularly contemporary and fantasy (I go back and forth depending on how I'm feeling).
Anyway, good luck everybody in your own 2016 reading challenges!

I'm up for any genre but mostly I like myster, thriller, horror, fantasy, sci-fi. I found this group by accident playing around on Goodreads. I was looking for a bookclub/challenge but didn't want to be too strict about what I HAD to read this year. I will follow a couple of book challenges like pop sugar's and book riot's but very loosely.
There is more about me in the 1-50 books folder. I'm titled "Kirsten's 50 in 2016??!!!!"

My name is Ecem, (means Queen in Turkish, well, yeah, mothers) and i am from Turkey. I'm a translator, editor, transcriptionist in three different magazines in Turkey, as well as in other fields. I'm a bookworm since i was four, for me the books are the lives that you can't get to live unless you read and disappear in them, they are great ways to escape from all the negativity in your own life and also the best friends when you need to be consoled. Well, yeah I know that all i said was clichés but it is what it is and keeps me go on reading. Last year i was a bit lazy in my challenge, but this year i wanna read 110 books and i read 9 of them so far. Hope to keep up with the rest of you. Good luck to you all with your challenges. :)

Hey Ecem, we're colleagues! I'm a translator and editor, too (not transcriptionist, though).
Welcome everybody :-)

I only said 25 books for this year so I wouldn't disappoint myself. Haha.
I found this group by chance and I am super excited!

I am Irene from Scotland. Love reading and have since a very young age, sadly don't get time to read as much as I'd like to. I love the Diana Gabaldon books, Victoria Hislop, Adriana Trigiani, Paullina Simons and absolutely adore Fanny Flagg books. Suppose really I enjoy books set in places that hopefully one day I can visit. I was brought to good reads as I am looking for inspiration and to find authors similar to others I have read. my goal is to read all the paperback books I have to clear the stash away and have kindle items only - apart from much loved favourites which I can't get rid of. Looking forward to getting to know you.
Irene

I try to save my eyes for the interwebs and those few tragic books that simply cannot be had in audio format. I reeeeeeally like the Internet, so a book has to be wow so critical to my happiness--like graphic novels or Pop Sonets or the third book in a series that for some unknown reason the publisher has decided to TORTURE ME by not putting out as an audiobook even though they got my $24.99 for each of the first two books. So much worse than two books in hard cover and then the third in paperback!
But aside from pretty much requiring that it come out in audio, I will pretty much go for any kind of book. I will not finish it if I hate it, because I already have a freaking migraine, I don't need to spend 21 hours of that migraine with a murder mystery I figured out five hours ago with a detective I hate and a corpse raper. I like scifi, history, comedic autobiography, behavioral economics, linguistics, fantasy, chic lit, spy thrillers, heists, dystopian future YA with strong female protagonists, middle grade gross comedy (nephews are the best excuse ever), gay romance, paranormal badass female protagonists who get whatever paranormal hottie they want, historical fiction about queens/almost queens, steampunk, fantasy set in thinly veiled historical places that aren't Europe.
I also read (but often do not enjoy) biographies of women in science or historical importance, anything recommend to me by someone in person, whatever my sister is reading, books about science (written by scientists *and* someone who can write, because I took Shakespeare for Science Majors in college and we should have brought the football team in to tutor the other Chem majors and I don't hate myself), books by Margaret Atwood (because apparently I do hate myself), and the top books of the year on Goodreads (because I like to talk to people about books and I figure that way I will at least get the good books from a wide swath of genres.)
And then of course I read SheHulk, Wonder Woman, Bat Woman, Thor the Mighty, and I just started the Buffy Omnibus.
Plus a terrifically terrifying and satisfying amount of fanfiction, buzz feed lists, articles spiraling me into the most amazing and random link holes, and rabid political rants on Facebook, because someone has to police my Libertarians without writing them off as racist lunatics.

I also use OverDrive through my library, but it isn't my favorite audiobook app. I currently have...7 books downloaded on OverDrive, including my current listen The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood. But it is buggy.
My favorite app is Audible. I pay like $22/month for 2 audiobooks and a subscription to the New York Times headlines edition which is about 20-30 minutes a day. The app is far and away more stable, but the thing I love about Audible is that you can return any book for any reason for up to a year. I own over 400 books through them and I must have listened to and returned at least 200 more. I have even listened to then entire series and didn't like the ending of the series, called them, and they let me return all 7 books. They are amazing about it. And the people there love books, and love to talk about books, so it is actually really nice to talk to them about how much you hated the ending of the book!
Anyway, I probably use my library apps as much as I use Audible, because you can't beat free, but there is something every bibliophile loves about owning their own books, even though you still go to the library.
I have been using Audible since before there was such a thing as an app. You had to download MP3 files onto your computer and sync them onto an MP3 player that you had to order from them, because there wasn't even an iPod yet when I first used them. They used to be a provider of books for the blind, but now they're owned by Amazon, so they share bookmarks with Kindle books, which is awesome.

I'm not knew to goodreads, but I am knew to this group. I am a huge fan of Harry Potter (read them all 15 times), and I'm currently reading Shadow Study by Maria V Snyder. Last year I read 49 books I think.
I mainly like reading dystopian books, but also fantasy, young adult, sometimes realistic fiction and a little science fiction. My non- book interests include everything Tim Burton, The Offspring, Foo Fighters, the White Stripes, Skid Row, Gaslight Anthem and a few other bands.
Any similar interests?

I am Corrie and I am from the Netherlands. I like a lot of different kinds of books. But at the moment I mostly read detectives (every second book), romances, rural romances, and children books. Although the first book of my reading challenge this year was fantasy.
I read about Goodreads on Facebook groups. And before that I found Goodreads when I was looking for the chronological order of the Christmas novels of Ann Perry.
My reading goal this year is "The Modern Mrs. Darcey Small Yearly Challenge", to which I added a german book, a french book and a russian story. So all in all 15 books.
That is why I do not understand Goodreads says I am three books 'behind': I have indeed not filled in my books yet, but don't you think it should be one?

Totally forgot to properly introduce myself & dove straight into the reading challenge thread.. Sorry!
My name is Marjolein Jansen, 39 years old, I live in Haarlem, the Netherlands.
I love reading, always have, and love reading English (one of the greatest languages!), but try to keep up with my Dutch as well.
I work in Amsterdam for a charity lottery organisation and try to go on holiday as much as humanely possible (or as much as I'm allowed to by my boss ;)
So happy to have found GoodReads and am discovering how it all works.
Thanks!
Marjolein

I'm Angela, from Citrus Heights, CA (just outside of Sacramento). I love reading just about anything in the adult, NA age category, though I have been into thrillers lately. My goal is to read 50 books this year, and I've completed two so far. The last was The Silent Sister by Diane Chamberlain. Loved the family dynamics in that story.
I'm searching for emotional women's fiction in the vein of Jodi Picoult - I'd love to find new authors in that genre. Suggestions are welcome!
Looking forward to a year of books and meeting new people!

I am Yolandi from South Africa, my goal is 10 books a month this year. I enjoy almost any genre. Book recommendations are welcome.
Thanks

My name is Matt and I am from the United States I love reading and been doing it for years. The 2016 challenge is too small as far as I am concerned. I probably read 125 books in any given year. This year it is focused on the 2016 reading challenge. I am a retired military vet and training to be a gunsmith.

I love medicine (I'm a nurse) so medical thrillers are my favorite but also enjoy historical fiction, biographies, and self-help books (all kinds).
My goal is to read at least one book for fun each month. Not a lofty goal yet very doable for me:)

I'm Erin and I live in Michigan, USA. Normally, I'd be joking about being up to my knees in snow, but we've had a very mild winter where I live so those of you having to deal with Snowmageddon, I feel your pain :(. But, I am not envious of you at all, LOL ;P.
The majority of books I read are in the Urban Fantasy genre. I do like a bit of Fantasy now and then, but I feel that vampires, witches, and werewolves are the ultimate escape and the stories always appeal to me. The Steampunk genre is another favorite and one I don't read enough of unfortunately, but I've been building up my collection when I can.
I found this particular group through a Goodreads acquaintance, although she has not joined 2016, yet. I'm hoping to connect with more readers that will help encourage me to reach my reading goal of 12 books this year (if I exceed that... hey, hey!).

i love reading, specially books on history.
last year shifted to Kindle. am enjoying it totally.
cheers

My goal for this year 50 books I think.
I enjoy to reading science-fiction, fiction, fantasy. But I want to read literatüre books and I hope I will read it. But currently I read fiction and fantasy.

My husband is a nurse, too. And my son will, hopefully, be starting nursing school later this year.
Do you read all those medical records because you're in informatics? My son is thinking of pursuing that when he makes it to the master's degree stage.

I enjoy reading to fiction, science fiction and fantasy.

Talking about books, I love fantasy and horror. But I always try to give chances for the unknown books and authors.
In this year, my reading challenge goal are 30 books. Ten more then the last year. So... Hello once again and, see you guys.

Welcome, John. My husband was prior Navy and Marines- he was a corpsman. Catching up on 20th century literature is always one of my goals- I took one one modern lit class in college even though I have an almost major in it. And for years and years I kind of regarded most of it as inferior, which is what the attitude was when/where I went to school. I think this is the year I'm going to try again to read Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace.

My name is Fadwa, I'm a 19 years old girl from Morocco.
I like to read a diversity of genres but at the moment i'm looking for more contemporary and historical fictions to add to my TBR because if you take a look at it, it is mostly filled with fantasy and sci-fi. I don't like biographies that much unless they're from someone I'm interested in or/and someone that has accomplished something meaningful.
I have been in a reading slump for 5 months - yeah that bad haha ! - and my studies have made it worse (I'm a medstudent) because I was telling myself I didn't have time which obviously was just an excuse.
I discovered this group just browsing around goodreads and I really like the concept so I joined.
If you have any suggestions, feel free to recommend and/or add me as a friend I would love that too.
Have a beautiful day
