ABANDONED. crazy book with three houses and one of them is booby trapped

This is kind of a children's book. All I remember was that the cover had three houses on it and it's about this boy that goes there to live with some relatives or something and there's a girl neighbor and they go into an abandoned house and it's full of secrets and stuff. For some reason I distinctly remember that the bottom three steps of the house's stair case here like a sea-saw so the kids had to stand on each side at the same time to balance it out. I mostly remember that it was super weird and I didn't understand it so I wanted to read it again to see if it made more sense now.
