I agree, I like it so far.

Jill H. (bucs1960) Sometimes I like to have a little book to put in the car or at the breakfast table for something to read for a few minutes. This little book (165 pages) is just the ticket. It is comprised of personal ads from the London Review of Books, placed by literate people.....some are hysterically funny; others are a bit sad.....but all are enjoyable. I like this one: "From now on I'm only going to reply to my own ads. That's because I'm funnier and better looking than any of you".

They Call Me Naughty Lola Personal Ads from the London Review of Books by David Rose by David Rose David Rose

Alisa (mstaz) Just started this today and although a little unexpected am enjoying it quite a bit.
Becoming Justice Blackmun Harry Blackmun's Supreme Court Journey by Linda Greenhouse by Linda Greenhouse

Very insightful into the relationships between the Justices. Turning out to be a lively little book.

I read that one last summer--it was good. Have you also read
Isaac's Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History by Erik Larson? I enjoyed that one almost as much as "Devil in the White City."

Sorry... Isaac's Storm A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History by Erik Larson Erik Larson

message 1306: by Jill H. (new)

Jill H. (bucs1960) Amy............I have read all of his books and I really liked
Thunderstruck by Erik Larson by Erik Larson Erik Larson. Nobody seems to mention it when citing their favorites but I thought it was fascinating.
I finished In the Garden of Beasts Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin by Erik Larson Erik Larson Erik Larson and I hate to say it but I didn't care for it at all but I'm sure I am in the minority!!!
Don't forget to cite the author's link in your above post, Amy. You are getting the hang of it!!!

Amy (amybf) | 5 comments What am I missing from my post? I thought it was complete...no? Please advise..I want to make sure I do it correctly!

I also read Thunderstruck by Erik Larson but I would say it is my least favorite of Larson's books. I can't quite say why...I guess it just didn't appeal to me the way the others did Erik Larson

message 1308: by Jill H. (new)

Jill H. (bucs1960) Amy....you are on the right track....it just takes some practice. The book should have the cover, the authors picture (if available) and the author's link. Like this.

Darcy (drokka) I am currently reading Breaking The Silence Veteran's Untold Stories From The Great War To Afghanistan by Ted Barris by (no photo) Ted Barris.

While I'm not all that fond of the writing style, the stories are very interesting. I do have to keep reminding myself that it is the author's journey in capturing veterans' stories, and not strictly about the veterans' stories.

message 1317: by 'Aussie Rick' (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) I have just started reading a book covering naval warfare during the times of the Greeks and Romans. Written by an American Admiral in 1937 it's a bit dated but so far an interesting read:

Jill H. (bucs1960) If Love Were All... The Story of Frances Stevenson and David Lloyd George by John Campbell by John Campbell

I have just received this book and can't wait to read it. I have always been fascinated by the relationship between "The Welsh Wizard" David Lloyd George, British PM and Francis Stevenson, his young mistress. Every time I read a book about the Versailles Treaty of 1918/19, there was always a mention that Ms. Stevenson accompanied the married DLG but there was never much information given. The title sounds like one of those bodice ripping romance novels (ugh) but I know it is not.

message 1321: by 'Aussie Rick' (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Sounds like an excellent book! A very interesting man in his own way, David Llyod George. Let us know what you think of it once you have finished it :)

message 1322: by Jill H. (new)

Jill H. (bucs1960) I think it will be, AR. The only thing that may put me off as I glanced through it is the use of lots of excerpts from letters. I don't mind a few but I'm not crazy about more letters than narrative. We'll see.

Historical Deception The Untold Story of Ancient Egypt by Moustafa Gadalla by Moustafa Gadalla

I just started this book, but I think this will be a really enjoyable read - the author wants to think you about all the facts you thought you know about the ancient Egypt - so this book simply forcing you to re-think about your knowledge and things you thougt these are common facts.

Jill H. (bucs1960) The Cuba Reader History, Culture, Politics by Pamela Maria Smorkaloff by Pamela Maria Smorkaloff
Everything you ever wanted to know about the Pearl of the Antilles. This book is comprised of articles/essays/reminiscences about Cuba, so it can be read at your own pace. Unfortunately, it is rather long and might be too big for you to take along.

Another take on Cuba is this book which provides a history of the American mob in the nightlife of Havana. It is quite well done, and if it is not exactly what you are looking for, it is certainly something you might want to read after you return from your trip.

Morgiana | 137 comments Jill wrote: "Oooh, Morgiana. That sounds interesting. Please let us know your thoughts when you have completed it."

Jill, to be honest...this book was really good at the beginning and at the end, showing how much the old Egyptians knew about architecture, astronomy, medicine, how the women were handled etc, but, and there is a big but...the author tried to convince the reader that King Thutmose III is King David of Israel, Akhenaton shall be Mose and Tuthankaton shall be Jesus Christ (if I remember well, I was a bit pissed) because it was lacking of facts and was quite unbelievable for me, and with this the author ruined the whole book for me.

message 1337: by Geevee (new)

Geevee I'm half way through this. It is an interesting, highly readable and well researched account that uses Goebbels' own diaries - all 24 volumes that have now been translated and published - to reassess his actions, motivations and relationships. A very disturbing and vile but yet intriguing character.
