Victoria | 29 comments It's great to learn about all these book blogs. I know how much effort and creativity the writers put into them! I have a website, which includes a "reading. . ." tab where I review the 60 or so books I read each year. The "First Draft Blog" tab covers writing tips. The site also reviews movies and theater, comments on current events, and whatever I think will pique readers' interests! The URL is http://www.vweisfeld.com. Looking forward to hearing from YOU!

Rob Kaufman (rob_kaufman) | 42 comments Hi Victoria,
I visited your blog and was very impressed. One of the great attributes of your articles is that they are not lengthy. I like when the writer gets to the meaty part quickly and that's just what you do. I was able to find out right away what the Helen Mirren movie was about - and your thoughts... what the Amanda Knox book revolved around - and your thoughts, etc. etc. (The Knox trial also had me intrigued from beginning to end. ) Thanks for sharing this. I'm now following you on Twitter so please remember to tweet with each new post!

Victoria | 29 comments Thanks, Rob, for your kind remarks. I do tweet about each new post (with a very few exceptions)and notify my facebook friends, but the stream of Twitter is so like "drinking out of a firehose," I worry I miss a lot! If you feel the same, you can always subscribe to my blog, approx. 5 posts a week, except when I need a break! Again, thank you for the thoughtful response.

Rob Kaufman (rob_kaufman) | 42 comments From Sharon's Blog: "...but in reality I find them a bit of a trudge through treacle and always about a hundred pages or so too long."

Interesting you should say this, Sharon. I have some people tell me my books should be "longer". Since I'm like you and don't like when books are "100 pages too long", I edit those things I don't feel are important to the story. However, I'm learning some people LIKE those extra 100 pages. It's a fine line, I guess, and also very subjective.

Very much a matter of taste. Elmore Leonard said "leave out the bits that people tend to skip over," which is good advice, but a thriller reader once told me she skips all the descriptions! (then how can she "see" what's happening?) I love description! I am a techno-thriller devotee, so three pages about how a particular gizmo works is exactly what I want to know.

Rob Kaufman (rob_kaufman) | 42 comments Victoria wrote: so three pages about how a particular gizmo works is exactly what I want to know.

Maybe I should write two versions of each book - the longer, more detailed version and the short, more succinct version. I aim to please...

message 213: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Mccall i don't mind the descriptive stuff if its pertinent to the story and helps to see where things are going however when there are just words there to fill pages and wouldn't be missed then there is no need for them to be in the book at all. with the book that I reviewed that brought this discussion about - I feel that there is an expectation of the book to be a certain length and therefore its words for the sake of making the book the requisite number of pages rather than helping along the story.

As always though its a personal opinion and if we were all the same the world would be boring

Hi. I have a blog where I was reviewing all the books I was reading. It's been a while since I have reviewed any books. I read a few I didn't care much for and I began to wonder, who am I to give an established author a less than glowing review. After all I'm still an author in the making. So, I have been rethinking how to post to the page, maybe only the books I really like. My page is still up. Check it out. You may find a book I've reviewed that interest you. http://brigittamoon.blogspot.com/

Steven Moore You have so many choices here that I feel inadequate in mentioning my own blog. It's primarily op-ed, even for the writing posts that are a bit unconventional, controversial, and acerbic at times. I also do book reviews and author interviews occasionally. I accept queries for the latter but not the former. Some might also be interested in my "News and Notices from the Writing Trenches" that appears most Fridays (an eclectic mix of news for readers and writers and a wee bit of self-promotion).

Richard Wren (richard_wren) | 12 comments I do, it's called WRENSENSE and is available at http://tinyurl.com/WrenSense

Somewhat general, it covers info about my writing career (having started at age 82) and colorful information about my 4 (soon to be 5) books. Would consider cross blogging.

message 231: by Steven (new)

Steven Moore @ Richard...and others,
I don't know about cross-blogging, but people are welcome to repost any of my blog articles as long as I get credit. I have quite a few on the writing business (see archive), including one today. I guess one could call such a repost a guest post.
And Richard, you are a wonder. I'll probably never make 82. I thought it was neat to make 50. I learned to play the piano the year before, though. I can sightread a fakebook fairly well now...good R&R.
I wish I could keep up with all these wonderful blogs!

Great pages and links.
I will release my third novel at the end of August and am looking for blogs doing either author interviews, books reviews, or interview swaps with other authors. I also have books to give away.
Would love to hear back from bloggers who does this.

I do book reviews all of the time. Most of the books I have gotten from authors or Blogging for Books, NetGalley or Story Cartel. Here is my blog

message 240: by Steven (new)

Steven Moore I mentioned above that I occasionally do author interviews on my blog. I should have said that any author can request one--the "occasionally" is used because not many do. I have a standard list of questions my interviewee can choose from; if you query me with an email (or via email), I can send the list.
Of course, I'm also willing to be interviewed, and have been in the past, even in the UK.
My own short stories, book reviews, and interviews are relegated to Wednesday's blog posts. I reserve Fridays mostly for movie reviews and my "News and Notices from the Writing Trenches" newsletters. I don't do book review or interview exchanges per se, but sometimes the latter work out that way.

message 245: by Kathy (new)

Kathy | 1 comments For those of us with e-reader tablets, I would like to find a blog, or site, that lets us know which new books are available as e-books for EPUB or Kindle. I belong to a bunch of online libraries, but many times, the books my groups are reading are not available at the libraries, other than go into the actual library, and rent the book.

Because I read so much, I cannot afford to purchase every book that is suggested, or reviewed.

It's very frustrating. Also, I've been looking for a really (really) good Thriller/Mystery. Most disappoint me in regard to plot, or final reveal, due to one thing or another. I love being surprised! Ty.

message 246: by Steven (new)

Steven Moore @ Kathy,
On Amazon, you can go to a particular genre and search by publication date, most recent first. On Smashwords (available in multiple formats), you can go to a particular genre and search by "newest." Both tend to bring up more recent and/or more "popular" books in each genre. I doubt you want to see ALL new ebooks--there are so many each week! Amazon, of course, sells other books, but you can exclude all pbooks by going to the Kindle Library. Smashwords is ONLY ebooks.
About affordability: indies are cheaper--I prefer to buy four indies at $2.99 than one trad-pubbed at $12.99, but that's just ye olde frugal curmudgeon me. Both Amazon (Unlimited and Prime) and Smashwords (in association with Scribd and Oyster) have lending programs. I think Library Thing does too, and Joe Konrath has a new service that reaches out directly to libraries (if your public library is participating, they'll tell you). There might be more lending programs.
I'm in the same boat, though. I'd go broke if I had to pay top dollar for all those indies I peruse for leisure entertainment and freebies I receive in exchange for an honest review. My only source of pbooks (hardcover and trade paperbacks) come from b-day and Xmas presents.
I AM going broke pumping all my royalties back into the next ebook I write, though. Still in the red. That makes it doubly hard to pay exorbitant prices for ebooks. I think twice about paying even $5. [Naysayers reading this should NOT tell me that's no more than a meal at McDonald's. I do that in my promos, but I do NOT eat at McDonald's. ;-) ]
Please keep reading. It's great entertainment for the price, but I don't have to sell you on that first idea.
r/Steve

message 248: by Steven (new)

Steven Moore @ Ryan,
Are you listed on Simon Royale's? I can't remember you there, but I've pretty much given up on that list because too many reviewers and bookbloggers are swamped by backlog and temporarily closed. While that's understandable (too many new books and authors, too fee reviewers), it was sort of depressing to go through the list for my last few books.
I read a lot of UK authors' books, so I should be reading UK bookbloggers too. I'll keep you in mind.
