My group read the first ten chapters of Boot Camp, by Todd Strasser. In the beginning of the book Garrett, the main character, was taken away from his house, and was sent to a boot camp for troubled teens by his parents. The boot camp is called Lake Harmony, and the conditions there are similar to the ones in prison. When Garrett first arrives at the camp he’s put in a small room with no windows and a bed, as described on in page 7,” Then i’m put in a small, windowless room with a military-style, metal framed bed.” He then has to strip for the guards and change into new clothes, on page 9,” strip,” he orders. The word is so unexpected that i assume i heard him incorrectly. “Sorry?” This whole time Garrett has been at the camp he still doesn't know why his parents sent him there, and the conditions keep getting worse. One day during lunch Garrett was called out by one of the head guards and was asked to tell everyone why he was at Lake Harmony. Since he didn’t know why he was there he kept saying i don’t don’t, and the guards took that as talking back and sent Garrett to TI. TI stands for temporary isolation, and it’s worse than it sounds. People that are sent there are required to lay face down on the floor without getting up. (page 30),” … where i am forced to lie facedown on the cold concrete floor for twenty hours a day except for a few minutes here and there to eat or use the bathroom.” these are only some of the harsh conditions that Garrett had to face in the first ten chapters of the book, and he’s only been there for a few days.
