Charlotte (charkro) | 1786 comments Synopsis taken from the official website:

Setting: Ichidian Universe

In the universe where the League is law, most live in fear. We fight back. Welcome to a world where corrupt assassination politics dominate everyone. It’s kill or be killed.

For Caillen Dagan, a defiant soldier of fortune, survival isn’t a right, it’s a brutal daily battle. Moving through the Ichidian universe like a wraith, his brushes with the law and death are legendary. But when an act of rare heroism reveals his hidden birthright, he’s forced into a world much more dangerous and cold-hearted than the bloody streets where he was raised- one of obscene wealth and lethal politics.

Ferocious and determined, Desideria Denaraii serves as an official bodyguard for her queen. Born of questionable genetics, she will do anything to prove herself worthy of the weapons she carries and the position she’s won by combat. But when she uncovers a ruthless plot to assassinate the queen and overthrow her country’s government, Desideria is caught in the crosshairs.

With assassination contracts out on both of them, Caillen and Desideria must learn to fight together or die alone. And if they fail, their governments will fall into the hands of an unimaginable evil.

1. Did you enjoy the book? Why? Why not?

2. Did you feel that the book fulfilled your expectations? Were you disappointed?

3. What did you think of the characters? Could you relate to them or no?
- Who were your favorite characters?
- Who were your least favorite characters?

And a couple of bonus questions:
1. If you are re-reading this book, did you notice anything this time around, that you missed the first time?

2. If you are re-reading this book, has your opinion(s) of the book and/or the characters changed? If so, how?

Charlotte (charkro) | 1786 comments Good grief, I am so late in getting started here. Welcome to the holiday season. XD

Overall, I really liked this book. I find it interesting that on the official site, SK mentioned that she completely rewrote the book from scratch, and it shows in the writing. =)

Desideria was the first League heroine that I really and truly liked. Yes, she did make a mistake or two, but she kicked ass and proved herself resourceful.

The Qillaqs were ... interesting to say the least, they reminded me of Amazons.

While Caillen's designation as heir to an empire seems sudden, there are hints in previous books as to what was going to happen; in BoF, it is stated that Caillen was adopted, while in BoI he is identified as Emperor Caillen de Orczy.

Just a thought or two, to get things started. =)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments This is one of my favorites! I ended up loving everything about Caillen, and his magic backpack. I wrote my character with a magic backpack before I read this, so the first time Caillen pulled something out of it I laughed and laughed.

Charlotte (charkro) | 1786 comments Oh yes, that everything-but-the-sink backpack. Although I suspect that if one looked hard enough, they'd find a sink, too. XD

Everyone should have a backpack like that. XD
