Thanks for sharing. What a moving essay. I know that there are so many more Jessicas and Anis out there, feeling shame and not ever having anyone acknowledge the horror of what happened to them. It is very brave of her to share.

I'm going to post this question in a few spots, so I apologize if you have to read it more than once. In July, we are reading Serafina and the Black Cloak. Has anyone read it already? My grandson is visiting and he enjoys listening to audiobooks in the car with me, but I'm wondering if it's too old for him. He's just turning 7. The author answered a question on the book page stating that 8 year olds have read it, but that the beginning may be a bit creepy. I'd love to hear from someone that's read it already. What are your thoughts? Too creepy or ok?

Savanes | 2107 comments Really? I hated so much Me before you that I won't bother with the second one.

message 81: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 6820 comments Mod
That's how I felt when A God in Ruins won, Savanes. I really loved Me Before You and I've already read After You. I wouldn't say it has "high literary value" lol, but it was fun IMO. I thought Janina's comment was sarcastic due to the triple dots at the end. Janina??

message 82: by Savanes (new)

Savanes | 2107 comments I didn't catch the triple dots ;)

message 83: by Janina (new)

Janina (sylarana) | 692 comments Yep. I found "me before you" intolerable. But, my reading schedule is totally clogged up anyways, so I'm kind of glad I won't even have to think about joining in on this one.

message 84: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I haven't read Me Before You yet. It sounds way too angsty. However, there are many more books that I would think have higher literary value. But, this is a reader's choice, so someone must like it.

message 85: by Janina (new)

Janina (sylarana) | 692 comments It's essentially a tearjerking romance of the conservative kind trying to elucidate a moral dilemma, but failing miserably in doing just that. Jm2c. Many people love it.

Well I loved it and I'm not one for getting excited of the hype. Forget about what other people have said and just look at the premise of the story. If you think you would have read it without the hype, then do :)

message 92: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 6820 comments Mod
I agree. I usually don't like books that have too much hype, but I loved this one. I think you may want to make your decision based off the blurb.

message 93: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Hype can be warranted, other times it just annoys me. Like when Jonathan Franzen has a new book and it gets critical attention without any one reading it.

Kirsten *Dogs Welcome - People Tolerated" wrote: "Ugh. None of those so-called humor books appeal to me."

I have to say I'm the same. I think I said this earlier in the year at some point but I feel that this category really needs to be looked at, as at the moment it's been taken over by celebrity memoirs.

message 97: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Yeah, it's more a "look at me!" category, isn't it?

message 98: by Janina (new)

Janina (sylarana) | 692 comments I feel that many of the categories would require some editing of what are nominees. Even with write-ins, I would appreciate if they had someone go through the options and assign books to the best fitting category before starting the voting process.

Or maybe simply a complete ban on celebrity books as these get votes simply because people for once know the author ;)

message 99: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I don't vote unless (1) I've read it, or (2) I have heard good things and want to read it.

They do need to work on the categories though. Maybe split some apart. Do they do any "vetting" of the categories? Sometimes I see romances in the mysteries for instance.

Personally, I feel MODERN ROMANCE could've been just fine in the Humor category.
