I'm curious to know if there's a way to create a book promotion for a paperback book on Amazon. Is there a way to set up a BOGO or a half-price special or something? I'm working with an author and I want to offer his first book free to anyone who orders the new one coming out this week. Is this even possible?

Yes, you can, but it would need to be initiated by whomever listed the books. If your publisher listed them, they would have to initiate it. Items are listed on Amazon through SellerCentral.amazon.com. Once you log into your account, there are a list of links across the top of the inventory page, one of which is "Advertizing". If you click on the link, it will give you a drop down menu with a few choices.
And Amazon just created giveaways, a little like the Goodreads one. However, you pick a product out of their catalog and THEY mail it to the winner. A paperback book does work here.
