I had a hard time reading Go Set a Watchman but, I loved To Kill A Mockingbird!

Abbey Stansfield | 3 comments I had heard that it was hard to get through but I had already bought it so I decided to challenge myself this year. If nothing else I get to read To Kill a Mockingbird.

Yes to Kill A Mocking Bird is wonderful. I got interested in Go Set A Watchman about halfway through, lost interest and then got it back again haha. Who knows though you might love it!

Mike | 443 comments I am currently reading Warm Bodies for my Romance Set in the Future, but if someone wanted to use it for this prompt, I discovered that there is a prequel, The New Hunger.

I loved those books!

message 107: by Maree (new)

Maree Silver I'm reading kids books so am going with 'Skellig' and it's prequel 'My name is Mina' by David Almond. Skellig won an award so should be good.
The Maze runner and Divergent series are great. Another YA option is the Loren Legacies with 'I am Number 4' as the first, there are several add ons that could constitute prequels to the series.

I've stumbled upon two more books that have prequels (I'm beginning to think there isn't a YA fantasy book that does NOT have a prequel!!) - I don't think any of these were mentioned before?

The Girl of Fire and Thorns (which I happen to be reading right now - I didn't think it was going to be a Challenge book, but hey maybe it can be!) has three prequels to choose from: The Shadow Cats, The Shattered Mountain, and The King's Guard.

Red Queen has prequels: Queen Song and Steel Scars.

Throne of Glass has several prequels that have all been collected and released as a novel - these are true prequels involving the same characters, and not character studies of auxiliary characters or alternate POVs of the same action seen in the main book: The Assassin and the Pirate Lord, The Assassin and the Healer, The Assassin and the Desert, The Assassin and the Underworld, and The Assassin and the Empire which are all collected in The Assassin's Blade.

message 109: by Stacey (new)

Stacey (simmyreads) | 11 comments I read The Hobbit as my prequel, Fellowship of the Ring of the ring as the book with a prequel. The Two Towers as the book I haven't read since high school, and The Return of the King as the classic from the 20th century. I haven't watched the movies yet, and a friend keeps asking me over to marathon them, but I want to read the books again since it's been 30ish years since I've read them.

Shadow and Bone and its prequel The Demon in the Wood by Leigh Bardugo.

message 111: by Angie (new)

Angie (bookholdsandjellomolds) | 32 comments I read Across a Star-Swept Sea and its prequel The First Star to Fall by Diana Peterfreund. Excellent series!

message 112: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) I ended up going with Cinder and its (very short - yay!) prequel Glitches. There are so many series out there now, and I was loathe to start another one, but thankfully this one is a lot of fun & really enjoyable.

That's my choice too

message 114: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 19 comments I am reading Ali's Pretty Little Lies and Pretty Little Liars for mine.

message 115: by Anne Katrin (new)

Anne Katrin | 3 comments I read Cinder and its prequel Fairest. Originally I wanted to use Cinder for the "book based on a fairy tale" but I am using Scarlet instead.

... you could fit almost the whole series into this challenge, if you read Winter as the "over 600 pages" one, and maybe Cress for the one with a blue cover.

message 116: by Grace (new)

Grace Nguyen (graciedaisy) I'm reading Graceling by Kristin Cashore for this section, it has a prequel called Fire :)

message 117: by Christi (new)

Christi (christibooks) I read Rogue Lawyer and its prequel Partners: A Rogue Lawyer Short Story by John Grisham. I liked the prequel a bit better. Probably because it focused mostly on the courtroom and was just one case. Rogue Lawyer follows several cases at once and if you hadn't read the prequel you'd be very curious about the silent and imposing sidekick, Partner. Good summer reading.

message 118: by Grace (new)

Grace Keller (gracekeller) If anyone needs another idea, I am using Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore and it's prequel Ajax Penumbra 1969 by Robin Sloan. It's been on my list for a while, so I'm excited to tackle it as part of the challenge!

message 120: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sera_87) | 2 comments i really need help with this one! most of the books already mentioned I've already read the triology/book and my personal challenge is to not repeat books.

It also cant be an ebook because my kobo is dumb.

so. HELP?

I don't think this has been mentioned yet, but my plan is to read Heartless by Marissa Meyer (of Cinder fame) which comes out on November 8. It's a prequel to Alice in Wonderland and is the story of the Red Queen. I read Alice earlier this year as half of this prompt.

I'm not re-reading any books for this challenge either, and I know that can make it tough sometimes!

How do you feel about graphic novels? The prequel to Lucifer, Book One is in The Sandman, Vol. 4: Season of Mists.

And there's always The Maze Runner, which has prequels The Kill Order and The Fever Code. I really did not like The Maze Runner, but it's been a popular choice for this category.

Or The Audition and Seraphina (which I thought was excellent - I haven't read the prequel)

Or you could go with classics: Wide Sargasso Sea and Jane Eyre

I quickly looked at your "read" shelf and didn't see any of these. Here's a list of 1684 other prequels: https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...

message 123: by JoAnna (new)

JoAnna | 84 comments Ugh, I feel like all books with prequels are either romance books, fantasy books or YA books, many of which are fantasy, as well. I'd love to find one more in the literary fiction category. I may reinterpret this to be 2 books in a series (where they are written in their chronological order) or 2 books with the same characters. I want to read ones that actually qualify for this category as it was intended, just struggling. Ideas???

message 124: by JoAnna (new)

JoAnna | 84 comments Now that I wrote that, I just found a John Grisham books and its prequel - Rogue Lawyer and Partners. Not litfic lime I wanted, but I like Grisham.

I'm going to be reading Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea.

Personally I wouldn't interpret it as 2 books in a series. Though you could read To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman this way.

Or The Hobbit is a prequel.

message 126: by Mike (new)

Mike | 443 comments I read The Maltese Falcon and it's prequel Spade and Archer. Maybe more up your alley?

message 127: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) That's a good choice, Mike. The books don't have to be by the same author.

message 128: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (runs4fun) | 4 comments Tara wrote: "Wait, no. God I'm confused lol the hobbit happens first and is also written first so is not a prequel that came after the original"

But Tolkien wrote "The Silmarillion" after LOTR and Hobbit, and that is definitely a prequel. That's probably what I will finally read. I've picked it up and put it down for years!

message 129: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Finished reading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë for the book part of this prompt, will be starting its prequel Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys on Monday.

I just finished Warm Bodies, which I really enjoyed (if you like zombies), and I realized the next book in the series, The New Hunger, is a prequel.

message 131: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E I just finished Jane Eyre and will be starting its prequel Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys on Monday. Buddy reading both with Kirsten!

message 132: by Katie (new)

Katie Schmoyer | 7 comments Planning to read Wicked and The Wizard of Oz.

message 133: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthais) Turns out I TOTALLY misinterpreted this and pretty much just read two books in a series, d'oh! I've read Red Queen and Cruel Crown this year, so luckily that'll work :)

Would absolutely recommend the Jane Eyre/Wide Sargasso Sea combo, I read them in sixth form for an English Lit essay, and absolutely loved WSS for how it totally turned Jane Eyre on it's head!

message 134: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments I'm reading Peter Pan and Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens / Peter and Wendy. I've actually read Peter Pan two, maybe even three, times before but I've never read any of the others in the series.

message 135: by Madison (new)

Madison Tara wrote: "Except that the book itself isn't the same as the movie. You could technically use it, but the actual book "fantastic beasts and where to find them" is more of an encyclopaedia of magical creatures..."

Agreed, the original is merely a fun encyclopaedia of magical creatures; however, you could read the screenplay that is coming out in November. I think that could possibly work for this category. Food for thought.

message 136: by Madison (new)

Madison Kira wrote: "I found Who Fears Death and its prequel The Book of Phoenix by Nnedi Okorafor. I'll be reading these for this prompt."

Awesome suggestion! I have never heard of this author and am excited to read her work.

message 137: by Amber (new)

Amber | 38 comments I read The Glass Castle & Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls. A little outside the box as one is a memoir and one is fiction. But Half Broke Horses is written as kind of a fictional imagining of what her grandmother's memoir would have been, so I think it fits.

message 138: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Finally finished the Letters & Criticism part of my volume of Wide Sargasso Sea. This is a prequel to one of my favorite books Jane Eyre.

This is the story of Rochester's mad first wife and why she was like she was.

message 139: by Kim (new)

Kim Erickson (madtroll) | 1 comments Jasper Fforde's The Eyre Affair and the second one in the series, Lost in a Good Book. I'm hooked on this series about the "book world"

message 140: by Ariel (new)

Ariel | 126 comments Would it count if I read the latest book in a series and then the prequels to that series? Or would the prequels only be considered prequel to the first book?

I read A Dance with Dragons this year and was thinking I could read A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to fit this category.

My other thought was Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay because I read Harry Potter 1 for the "book from high school" prompt. Also I can easily read another book for that prompt but Dance with Dragons is my over 600 pages book--not so easily replaceable. Alas the screenplay is on hold at my library and I'd rather not have to purchase it.

Yes, I think that would count.
