sample or excerpt text???

How do you choose an excerpt from your book?

It depends on the purpose. For a 'sample' to be included on a sales site (Amazon, Apple, etc.) I use the first chapter or two (as much as the site will allow) to give a clear indication of the book.

Excerpts need to convey a sense of the primary dramatic tension of the story and also provide a bit of teaser. For these I like to use dialog sections since they tend to be more immediate.
