Super, super good! Read it last summer and can't wait for the movie! If you liked Gone Girl, you'll love it!

message 53: by Donna (new)

Donna Craig | 9 comments I had been putting it off for years because I read bad reviews, but I finally read Allegiant. And I loved it.

I'm toying with the idea of reading Tarzan Tarzan of the Apes (Tarzan, #1) by Edgar Rice Burroughs for this. Do you think it counts? There is a new Tarzan movie coming out. I pretty much am confident I will not like the book, because I never like ERB (hello, sexist and dated pulp!!), but ... it's a classic! It's on the "1001 Books to Read Before You Die" list (which I am slowly chipping away at, my plan is to read a few books each year from this list). And it will probably take me just a few days to read.

I think it counts. There's really a new Tarzan film? Cool! I loved the movie Greystone.

Yes! Even better, it stars the splendiferous Alexander Skarsgård! It sounds like it's sort of a sequel to the classic Tarzan story, because it starts "many years after he left Africa behind."

NATASHA DYER | 1 comments I read room by Emma Donoghue- brilliant . The film was released in January.

message 61: by Alice (new)

Alice Probably going to read The 5th Wave (The 5th Wave, #1) by Rick Yancey It was made into a movie this year, but I haven't seen it and won't until I read the books.

message 62: by Christi (new)

Christi (christibooks) I read How to Be Single by Liz Tuccillo because I know my friends will want to see the movie this month. It was ok. Four NYC women in their late 30s - one is newly divorced, the others are perpetually single. Alice, the main character, works for a publisher and pitches the idea of researching other countries' attitudes to single women as they approach their 40s. Her travels take her to France, Italy, Brazil, New Zealand, China, India and Iceland. As she hops the globe, her 3 friends become friends on their own as they each navigate their own particular dating scene.
I liked the friends better than Alice, truth be told.

I think the movie will only be loosely inspired by the book. I could totally picture Rebel Wilson as Ruby as I read. From the trailer it seems like that character is overexaggerated to make it more "Rebel Wilson".

Edited to add: saw the movie. It was much, much better than the book. Probably because the only things similar to the book were the main character's name and the movie title. LOL

message 63: by Katewegner (new)

Katewegner | 6 comments I read Allegiant for the movie prompt, after having read Insurgent for my YA book.

I had read the original Divergent with my teen-age daughter when it was released.

Meh. Glad it's over.

message 64: by Roxanne (new)

Roxanne M | 9 comments I read The Queen of Katwe, about a teenaged Ugandan girl growing up in the slums who becomes a national chess champion! Pretty interesting. It's becoming a movie this year starring Lupita Nyong'o.

message 65: by Juanita (new)

Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments I've started reading Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. I'm not sure if I'll use it here or for "takes place on an island" but I'm enjoying it so far. Wish I had more time to read it. (Busy time at work for me.)

message 66: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Just heard a story about a new film coming out that is based on a book comig out this year. The film is called "Alone in Berlin" and stars Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson and is based on the 1947 novel Every Man Dies Alone by Hans Fallada

Here is the link to the NPR story: http://www.npr.org/2016/03/20/4711227...

message 67: by Juanita (last edited Mar 21, 2016 06:09PM) (new)

Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments I just read The Zookeeper's Wife: A War Story by Diane Ackerman. It is a nonfiction book telling the story of Jan and Antonina Zabinski and their Warsaw Zoo during the German occupation of Poland. Becoming a film this year with Jeasica Chastain in the lead.

ETA: I also read Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them this week. I've owned it for 15 years but never actually read it. /typical

I'm in the middle of listening to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince so it was fitting to journey back to the wizarding world for Fantastic Beasts. It's also 42 pages so a very quick read.

I'm still planning on The Jungle Book for this prompt. With the exception of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which I read for another challenge, I've been able to slot the other "movie" books in other categories.

message 77: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Groves | 57 comments I read The BFG by Roald Dahl. I haven't seen the movie, which I hear wasn't that great, but will look for it on the cable channels later this year. The book is terrifically fun. Although it's a children's book, it's very entertaining for adults because of the extensive wordplay. To borrow a few words from the BFG himself, a book like this only comes along "once in a blue baboon," and it's a real "ringbeller" that made me feel as "happy as a whiffsquiddler." And finally, "It is the most scrumdiddlyumptious story."

The book is excellent. The movie was disappointing and they should be ashamed of themselves for doing such a poor job.

I would have to agree with you Sara. The movie was cringe-worthy!

I loved this book, and I thought the movie was decent. I went with my teen daughter, and kept my expectations dialed down to "teen girl" so maybe that did the trick!

message 81: by Taylor (new)

Taylor | 178 comments A friend and I read The Girl on the Train together. We both liked it but found certain aspects of it hard to believe. Overall it was a great book though and I am super excited to see the movie!

message 82: by Erin (last edited Sep 01, 2016 12:47PM) (new)

Erin Adkinson | 18 comments The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon The movie coming out is based on the main subject of the book, rather than the actual book being turned into a screenplay.

message 83: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthais) So many books into movies this year!

I booked to see Room just after New Year, so whizzed through this one really quickly in the first couple of days of January, an amazing book!

I've also just read the Girl on the Train like lots of others (pretty gripping, but possibly didn't quite deliver on the hype) and definitely need to read A Monster Calls and The Light Between Oceans asap!

message 87: by Kim (new)

Kim Erickson (madtroll) | 1 comments High-Rise by J. G. Ballard. Disturbing book, but it did get me thinking about class structure in the world. The Haves and the Have-nots Don't think I'll watch the movie
