Reggie Anderson, the author of this book and whom the book is about, is describing his childhood and what Christmas was like. His family did not have a lot of money and when he was eight he realized the relevance of working for what you want. His father bought him a bike that Reggie knew he could not afford and did whatever he could to make it the best Christmas ever regardless of the financial toll it would have on his father later. That Christmas Reggie saw the extreme sacrifices his dad made for him and his family and vowed to work very hard in life so that would happen to him or his father ever again. This quote really captures the struggle that Reggie had as a child and how he had to grow up pretty quick to help provide for his family.
