Spencer Hagan | 20 comments My favorite quote from this reading was “Often a man can play the helpless child in front of a woman, but he can almost never bring it off when he feeling most like a helpless child.” This quote describes Dick perfectly, inside and out. Dick is a helpless child. He pretends that he needs care and nurture from women so that he can get them. This strategy may work for a little bit, but soon it will be known what the intensions were all along. Women love to feel like they are needed. They want someone to care about them, but who does not? They need to know that they matter and playing a helpless child is the perfect solution to solve everyone’s problems. The sad and cold reality to this is once you play the helpless child for so long you begin to become one. When Dick lost both of the women he loved he began to be a helpless child. A great story that is similar to this would be the “Boy Who Cried Wolf.” The boy lied about the wolf for so long that it began to be his identity, because it was his go to move when he was bored. The townsfolk began to catch up on this, just like the people in the book began to see what Dick was all about. When an actual wolf came the people did not believe him nor care, just like when Dick became and helpless child, no one helped.
