Spencer Hagan | 20 comments My favorite quote from this reading was “If he had to bring all the bitterness and hatred of the world into his heart, he was not going to be in love with her again.” I really like this quote for two specific reasons. First, I really like it because it talks about the universal evilness of the world through, the bitterness and hatred. This is a warning to everyone that if you let every wrong thing in the world or any problem that goes wrong with you bring you down, then you will bring down everyone as well. It is like when a person is having a bad day and makes bad remarks and brings everyone down with himself or herself. Likewise, I like this quote because it shows how Dick’s love life was being broken down. Both of the girls he loved were gone. An outside source that would tie in perfectly would probably be Mr. Wilson, from the “The Great Gatsby”, another book by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The reason that Mr. Wilson relates is because when he found out about the affairs his wife was having, he became a bitter person. He was letting life take him down. As well as when he was told that Jay Gatsby killed his wife, he wanted vengeance and because of the vengeance, it caused him to not be able to love his wife, just like Dick.
