Spencer There is a quote from Heathcliff at the end of chapter 11, Legends, that states, "And there you see the distinction between our feelings: had he been in my place and I in his, though I hated him with a hatred that turned my life to gall, I never would have raised a hand against him" (266). This shows that love overpowers hatred, especially a common love. Bella bonds both Edward and Jacob together even though they very intensely hate each other. The only way to make enimies work together is to pit them against another enemy. This idea is in so many other stories. I have even noticed this in real life like when CPA is in competition with another school, everyone, even if they do not know/like each other very well, seems to band together to support our school. I even know of some friendships that have come from having a common enemy. These are the healthiest kinds of relationships, but it is a starting point. Edward and Jacob's relationship has such strange and at times confusing dynamics. I never know when or if they are mad at each other or if they are just putting up a front for Bella. Somehow they coexist for the sake of beating the common enemy because of their love for Bella.
