Caroline peered out from behind the tree, licking her lips hungrily. Her blonde hair was captured in a messy braid and her face was streaked with dirt. She was daring closer to a house than she had in years. Normally, when she saw a house she ran as fast as she could in the opposite direction, but the smell coming from the house had been so enticing, that she just had to stop and see what it was.

Someone left the house and hid, listening hard for them to pass. When they had, she dared to creep closer, still watching out. She ducked behind items as she made her way to the house, following her nose and her growling stomach. She hadn't smelt a pie like this in ten years. She hadn't had a sweet in ten years, being too frightened to go into a village and steal one from the baker.

At last, she was at the window where the treat had been left to cool. She considered taking the whole pie, but her quick glance in the window told her these people didn't have much. So, she pulled out her knife and went to work cutting out a small piece. (hide spoiler)]

Harper frowned, "You're not being punished. It's completely mental..." she trailed off. Of course, she too suffered from her own nightmares. All those people she had killed after the serum had changed her...there were so many. She never bothered with finding out the why, it was only the who, and how much they would be paying her, that had mattered. Her behavior had been half mad. And then when she finally got caught, in Stark Tower, it was as if everything had changed. She had crashed, fallen from the pedestal which she had put herself on, and she didn't like it. She had an epiphany, of sorts. Thank God she had. But this was different, this wasn't her own mental struggle, this was a battle that a friend, one she loved quite deeply, was trying to fight on his own. And it pained her to watch.
Trying to ease the tension a bit, she shook her head, "Don't worry about it. A sneeze can wake me up, let's be honest here. You don't even want to know the stuff I've heard Stark doing late at night," she snorted, rolling her eyes and pretending to gag. "But," she said again, returning to the subject, "This can't be healthy for you. Obviously it's affecting you quite a bit...I don't like seeing you like this." A small frown shifted over her pouty, red lips for a moment, before she hid it away. "I think I know a way, maybe, that we can ease the nightmares...if you're willing to try." (hide spoiler)]

The pub was relatively quiet tonight; apart from the soft rasp of the violinist's instrument and the crackle of the fireplace, everything was silent. Castiel was perched upon a bar stool, hugging a frighteningly large mug of beer in his calloused hands. The funny thing was, this certainly was not his first drink. He's had maybe 2 or 3 before that; Castiel certainly wasn't an alcoholic, not like him but it was a nice place to escape. By simply sitting and watching time pass on around him was an enigma for Cas - he wondered how people could exist so peacefully and so serenely. But that was a lie; he knew how these innocents could live such a happy life. It was because of him, because of Castiel and his soldiers that citizens could turn their head the other way. If he didn't remind himself of this every so often, Cas was sure he would lose his mind wondering why he continued down this path of service and duty.

Don't get him wrong, Castiel loves his blade. The feel of it when it clashes against another, the flow of fighting with it like an extension of his arm made blood flow and adrenaline rush. It was the aftermath that made Cas think. Maybe it was trauma from killing too many people, maybe it was an infection of the mind, but whatever it was wouldn't deter Castiel from his duty. To serve the kingdom and all it's people is his job; it is his life.
