I didn't read any more yesterday but I will read a few more chapters later. I am going to be starting another book tomorrow for the monthly challenge so I will probably slow down a bit with this.

Really? I don't know. The unabridged version, all 1276 pages, is a lot of book!
Oh well, it should keep me occupied until the Toppler!☺

These are just some out of the +20 that is states:
1964 TCOMT BBC television serial
1975 Film
1998 Television serial
1999 Forever Mine (losely based on this book)
2002 Film directed by Kevin Reynolds staring Jim Caviezal and Guy Pearce
2011 Revenge television series
The ending: (view spoiler)

The 2002 film adaptation with Jim Caviezel is the one I really want to see. I have watched the trailer and it looks like a lot of fun. Funnily enough, I bought the boxset of Series 1 & 2 of 'Revenge' a couple of months ago because I had heard quite a few people raving about it. I am looking forward to watching it.

Revenge sounds good too just watched the trailer =] Losely based on it by the looks of things, but guuud =D

Yes, 'Revenge' is definitely only loosely based on the book. I think all the adaptations, including the 2002 film, are quite different from the book from what I have heard. I don't mind though. It is such a long book that I guess they have to cut bits out, condense things here and there and change bits because otherwise the film would probably be 20 hours long! Lol.
I am up to Chapter LXIV (page 705).

I have really enjoyed taking part in this buddy read with you Sarah. We discovered a great book here! :)

The film is on it's way now and I'm really excited to watch it. Are you planning on watching it soon? Did you say you had it?

I've seen a few books about this too, a Stephen Fry one.. and a few sequel ones; the Son of Monte Cristo and the Wife on Monte Cristo. Not sure if the sequels sort of thing are by Dumas though.

It's funny you should mention the Stephen Fry book, The Stars' Tennis Balls (or 'Revenge' as it is called in the US). I bought it last year mainly because I am quite a big fan of Stephen Fry and wanted to read some of his books. I had no idea it was a modern retelling of TCOMC until after I bought it. I haven't read it yet because I wanted to read the original first but now that I have, I will get onto it. I haven't heard of the other two. I don't think they are by Dumas, I don't recall ever hearing that he wrote any sequels but I suppose it's possible that he did.

So many of the things you two mentioned are vague, but others bring parts of the story right back to me. Sigh - I really must do a re-read.
I added the Revenge book to my TBR list. I like Stephen Fry too, but have never read any of his books.
Lastly - I wanted to say that last week when I was "discovering" everything about V for Vendetta, I was going to tell you that The Count of Monte Cristo movie came up three times. V watched it when he was practicing sword fighting, V and Evey watched it together and a third time when Evey watched it alone. How's that for coincidence?

That is very coincidental about TCOMC film coming up in 'V for Vendetta'. It just goes to show how influential a book it is. I haven't read VFV yet, I have never been sure whether to pick it up or not. You really enjoyed it didn't you?

I enjoyed the audio book version of the movie screen play and the movie a lot. The graphic novel not so much. If I had it to do all over - I would simply watch the movie. It was the best of all, but I really wanted to get the original sense of the story line and went a bit overboard. That's me. I like to jump in with both feet if you haven't figured that out yet. ;)

Chapter XXXVII- (view spoiler)[I felt sorry for the Count of Monte Cristo when Albert shook his hand after Monte Cristo rescued him from Luigi Vampa. You could see by the way he trembled how much it pained him to take hold of this man's hand, the man who should/would have been his own son if everything had gone to plan. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter XXXIX- (view spoiler)[I liked how the Count's face went slightly red when he was introduced to Maximilien Morrel at Albert's breakfast. I think that was definitely a mixture of pride and affection. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter XLI- (view spoiler)[What to make of the scene where the Count came face-to-face with Mercédès and Fernand again! Fernand definitely does not recognise Dantès but I am not sure about Mercèdès The way she went pale makes me think that she did recognise him but that would make her the only person so far who has worked out who he truly is. Unless it was just her thinking that this man bore a resemblance to Dantès and that was why she paled? I guess we will find out either way. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter XLIV- (view spoiler)[Bertuccio's story was interesting. I wonder if he did actually kill Villefort? He definitely stabbed him but did Villefort actually die from the wound? Either way, it would appear that Villefort had been up to his old tricks again by refusing to help Bertuccio so I am not surprised that Bertuccio had a vendetta against him!
Also, it would appear that the diamond that Dantès gave to Caderousse was real after all. I have a feeling that not much good is going to come from him having possession of it though. (hide spoiler)]
