#1- "Listen my hatchling, for now you shall hear. Of the only seven slayers a dragon must fear." (7)
This is a song that the mother dragon sings to her new son to teach him about the ways of being a dragon. When she is talking about "slayers" she is not referring to actual slayers, she is talking about bad traits that a dragon can have that would cause its own downfall. That is what makes this quote so much bigger. It is saying that as long as you use your abilities wisely, then nothing will be able to stop you. I believe this to be true for all individuals, there is no person or object that has the capability to destroy you on its own. I have a internal locus of control and I do believe that everything that happens in my life is a product of my work so it is easy for me to say that there is no object outside myself that can cause major harm but I do actually believe it to be true. Although I may not be as athletic as a professional athlete I believe there are certain qualities that I possess that give me a unique advantage over them just like Auron, and if I use these unique attributes then I to can live a long and prosperous life. I liked how Knight gives dragons this style of story telling through song because it gives the message a stage to shine on, leaving a mark as you read each verse.
#2- "He's not worth more'n four hundred to the burning wheel." (56)
As the dwarves capture Auron they believe him to be a lizard at first sight and when they find out he is just a scaleless dragon they say he is basically worthless. Knight creates this unsuspecting hero to show how outward appearance does not make you anything special. I believe that this is the absolute truth in society, and no this is not me being just like everyone else talking about all the things wrong with society whilst I still judge people who look a little different or hold themselves differently than most. I feel that everyone is completely blind to their own arrogance and it takes a openly arrogant person to make sense of it all. I will admit that I believe I am different from everyone at school, but that is what makes me better than everyone else. I do not walk along a path that has already been worn down because there is nothing new, and I do not go out of my way to try and show off my colorful scales when I know I have none. I enjoyed this book because I understand Auron situation and struggles and differences and in the end how he triumphs against all odds gives me this sort of hope to do the same. I would love for everyone to pass me off as worthless because it allows me to freely do what I know is best without any confusion from ignorant people. I find that when to many people get behind you, it becomes impossible to hear your own voice. So yes, a scaleless dragon has no monetary worth because it's just a large lizard, but it is when people underestimate him that he is able to come out on top.
#3- "If legends knew what awaited, they'd spend their youths differently." (89)
This is a quote that goes along the lines of viewing life as a test that gives you the information afterwards. The common factor in legends tends to have a great unstoppable force that is overthrown by arrogance. We as humans love to take pride in work that we have done and in things that we do well or above the average level. This is natural because like animals, we compete and because we see actual fights as inappropriate at most times, we fight in different ways. However, most stories are in fact about war and super powers that destroyed everything in its path to world domination. So on the global scale we are in fact wild beasts that desire leadership amongst our pack. In most cases, once this role is obtained, greed and pride eat away the inside and cause the collapse of empires. This does not apply only to the large scale but inside every human there is a desire to lead and be the head of something and be better then your peers at something because it is human nature. And if one is not careful they could easily become complacent and prideful of their position of authority and soon be overtaken by someone else. This quote says that if only these people knew how they would shoot themselves, they would change how they acted so that they could keep their power and never give it up, but so blinding is arrogance that it corrupts the man and so he falls.
