Shelby Adcock | 10 comments Finnick and Katniss are talking to each other one night about President Snow and how he has used the people they love, to get deep into their minds. Katniss is about to let in and give into Snow’s ways and Finnick tells her, “it takes ten times as long to put yourself back together as it does to fall apart” (156). This reminds me of the movie “A Walk To Remember.” Landon has just married Jamie and she dies shortly after. He is broken, confused, and experiences extreme pain. The movie ends with Landon being years older stating that he still loves Jamie and he still even wears the ring. He says "I now believe, by the way, that miracles can happen." He is finally healed and after almost 40 years of healing he can finally accept that Jamie is gone and learn from her death. It only took the second of him hearing she has died to fall apart but he has spent years gaining back strength to bring him self back together. Say you broke a vase, it is shattered the second it hits the floor and you’re going to have to spend hours trying to glue all the little pieces together. To put yourself back together you have to heal and healing only comes with time.

Shelby Adcock | 10 comments The Capitol has caused Peeta to associate Katniss with fear so he is guarded when her name is even mentioned. Beetee is trying to figure out how to reverse it and he says “my guess is that fearful events are the hardest to root out. They’re the ones we naturally remember the best, after all” (180). I think this is 100% true. We remember fearful events because we want to make sure nothing like that will happen again to cause that fear. I can see this in my own life. I remember when I got into a small wreck because someone ran a light. I will never forget the pit in my stomach and the fear all through my body I felt when I saw that the car was about to hit me and there’s nothing I could do to stop it. That was two years ago but I remember every little detail because I’d never want anything like that to happen again. Fear causes change just like it did in Peeta. That fear for sure caused me to watch for other drivers because even though I may be driving safely, there are other people who are careless and unsafe.

Shelby Adcock | 10 comments Katniss is upset that the rebels (the army she’s fighting with) are killing hundreds of people without mercy and she wishes Peeta was with her because he would understand how she felt. She says “he would be able to articulate why it is so wrong to be exchanging fire when people, any people, are trying to claw their way out of the mountain. Or is my own history making me too sensitive? Aren’t we at war? Isn’t this just another way to kill our enemies?” (212). Katniss is questioning not only the motives of war but the tactics they use. This goes on in many wars today. A war gets drug on for so long it becomes so routine and people often begin to ask what are we even fighting for? Furthermore, Katniss is distraught about the army just letting people die deep in the mines because it hits close to home. Her father died in a mining accident. People ask her why it is such a big deal and she needs to get over it but they don’t know her story. Many people today are so quick to judge people’s actions and feelings when they don’t know their true motives. That’s why it’s better in life to just step back and ask what is causing you to feel this way instead of saying you shouldn’t feel this way. That is what I try to do.

Shelby Adcock | 10 comments Katniss is going through training to see if she is fit for actual combat and the whole time she can’t wait “to get to the woods and scream. Or curse. Or cry. Or maybe all three at once” (252). The woods are Katniss’s place of freedom. There she can think freely and it’s a place for her to run away from reality for a while and clear her head. She no longer has to hold everything inside when she is there. I believe that without the woods, Katniss would have already driven herself insane with her thoughts. This reminds me of Winston’s corner away from the telescreen in 1984. It is his place to free his mind of the restrains he has trained himself to have. He can reflect on the bad choices of the government and write out his feelings in a diary. He said it is what has kept him sane and kept him alive throughout his life. Even though he is caught, he at least experiences total freedom for his mind to roam at some point. Holding things inside like Winston and Katniss are forced to do is not healthy at all. Talking about your emotions and problems with someone is a way of coping. When you don’t do that, this emotions stir up inside of you while more and more things are put on your plate and it becomes too much to handle. This happened to me this year. With all of the stress of school and college and friends and trying to manage it all myself and not let anyone help, I was completely worn down. This was only for a little while but for that time it was miserable and I definitely learned I can’t try to balance all of that on my own and keep all the stress and anger caused by that inside. You get to a point where you physically can’t go anymore.

Shelby Adcock | 10 comments Katniss and the team are on their way to the capital and they’re acting out a battle for the promos to rally up the rebels. While they are acting they are all having fun and laughing when one of the bombs actually goes off killing Boggs. Katniss says “it’s as if an instant, a painted window shatters, revealing the ugly world behind it. Laughter changes to screams, blood stains pastel stones…” (277). Even though someone may get a break from reality for a little bit, it always comes back harshly. You can’t run from it. This reminds me of how I feel on spring break. It is a chance to run away from stress and all the problems of my life and just relax for a week but once you get back home, reality hits you harder than ever. In the movie The Last Song, Ronnie’s dad is going through a really harsh fight with cancer so she goes and stays with him one summer. She meets this guy named Will and they fall in love. She is so caught up with Will and spends all of her time with him, she forgets how bad her father is and is shocked when she finds he’s collapsed one day, and shortly after that he dies. This just proves that even when you have strayed as far as possible away from reality, it will always find it’s way back into your life.
