Andrew Pellow (bulls23) | 3 comments Hi,
I hope someone can help me with the title of this book. I read it many years ago (probably at least 30) and just can't remember the title.

The main characters are a man, his wife, their daughter and an older man who plays chess with the father.

The daughter starts having nightmares about World War 2. I remember one bit, she goes to Europe on a school trip and sneaks off to visit Auschwitz and obtains an empty Zyklon-B container.

Things escalate until the only way to save her is for the father to take his own life.

The older man plays a significant part but I can't remember exactly what.

If this rings a bell with anyone please help.

Thanks.

Andy

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Andrew, was this a book for adults or teens?

Does the reader know at the beginning that the father was a Nazi?

What genre was it? Mystery, suspense, etc?

Remember anything about the cover?

Andrew Pellow (bulls23) | 3 comments Hi Tab,

This was an adults book.

No, it is revealed as the book progresses. Difficult to describe its genre - probably suspense is best.

Thinking about the cover I think there was a swastika on it and it was predominantly white.

Fyi, this isn't you book but I'll mention it just in case you're interested - The Pieces We Keep by Kristina McMorris.

Michael | 7 comments It sounds like a book I read in the late 70's called Death Knell
by C. Terry Cline Jr. . In that book it became clear that the girl was a reincarnation of one of her father's victims . The older man was a survivor of the camps who was unaware of her father's past .

Death Knell is Michael's Click. Not sure that the posted blurb isn't a bit spoilerish for this book, but it seems to at least somewhat match Andrew's query.

Andrew Pellow (bulls23) | 3 comments Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your help. Death Knell is the book I'm thinking of - I have just looked at the cover on Amazon.
