That looks great. I use an older Kindle so I can see how they have really improved all the stuff that is a downside to mine.

No, I have the first version of the Kindle Fire. It's weird to think of it as old, but I suppose it is. Haha!

I got that one way wrong then. :) I have the paperwhite that you guys talked me into last year for which I am very grateful.

No worries! I was thrilled to see you get your e-reader so you could start enjoying so many more stories that aren't in print. And you return the favor all the times you share about a book that I can add to my list. :)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 849 comments I just got a 9-inch Amazon Fire for Christmas. I love it for reading at night and when I can't get to my computer, but I still prefer my old kindle ink display with keyboard because it's not as heavy and my computer because it's easier to type on!

87. Darcy's Journey - 5 stars

Wow, just noticed the price. It seems that the big difference is in the battery and width. It has a new font called ember as well. I think I will stick with my lovely paperwhite that stands up in the case to read under the covers at night. :)

I look forward to Jane and the Waterloo Map and Pemberley Ball.

Debbie (dmbrown) | 849 comments @Talia, I just posted my review on Darcy's Journey. I thought it was excellent in every way. Yep, I REALLY loved it. Probably one I'll go back and reread. If you've never read it, you should also check out Darcy's Trial by the same author, which is one of my personal favorites - I think Darcy's Journey is even better.

@Sophia, everyone else has really loved Jane and the Waterloo Map, so you probably will too. I vacillated about what rating to give it and considered everything from 2 to 5.

Pemberley Ball is another Regina Jeffers gem, so no surprise there!

Blurgh! I hate it when a book leaves me confused as to how to rate it. Don't worry. I already love the series so I should be alright.

Talia (kneyda) | 217 comments I read three books today.

Storm Clouds of Love: Only one death in this one. It was more of a traditional story. Sigh! I read this author for the body count so disappointed. The storm was what drew me in. 3 stars

Unwilling: A Pride and Prejudice Vagary: This author is one of the best. I love her story telling and her style. I would give it 5 stars and enjoyed it. This Darcy and Elizabeth pair were not my favorite though. Mr Darcy is never properly humbled nor does he ever entirely put Elizabeth first. Elizabeth caved in by accepting his proposal for the sake of her family which is all well and good but then continues to be a good and obedient wife which kind of made me a bit ill. I would have had less of a problem with Elizabeth being obliging if Mr Darcy had truly repented his haughty ways. Worth reading for Mr Bennet though.

The Trial of Elizabeth Bennet: Loved it. I had so much fun reading this one. body count: 3 Plus, Mrs Bennet and the girls surprised me in a funny way.

Debbie (dmbrown) | 849 comments I just finished reading a fairly new JAFF (released this January) that seems to be flying under the radar, judging by lack of reviews. If you're interested in something completely different, check out Courting Jane. Romance, time travel, JASNA meeting in Hawai'i, male author, and largely male point of view. I gave it 4 stars.

Me, too! Hoping I have time to finish it in the next day or two, because this is a concert weekend for me and I've got a bunch of rehearsals. About 40% into it, and it's great!

message 681: by Talia (new)

Talia (kneyda) | 217 comments I read Mystical, Magical Lizzy. MML was a sweet read. This book was better written than others by the same author with a total body count of ZIP and I still liked it.

message 682: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (sophiarose) | 1167 comments Mod
Haha! Love your comment about zip on the body count. That's how I feel about a few favorite mystery series. :)

Glad you liked it. I still need to read Melanie Schertz's books.

message 683: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 849 comments I've given up on Melanie Schertz. As much as I envy her creativity, I get so distracted with the writing errors that I can't enjoy the story. They're not free on Kindle Unlimited or I'd pick one up when there's nothing else I'm burning to read, but I just can't make myself spend money when I know it'll be another poorly written book.

message 684: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 700 comments Yes, her most recent release has Elizabeth's older brother...first as Adam and then Alex, then Adam and again, Alex! And I made a comment when it was a WIP but that correction was not made.

The first Schertz book I read I was horrified. She isn't a great writer but later I got one free somewhere and read it. I adjusted a lot by then to JAFF authors who often are not polished writers so that helped. I think of her more as a storyteller than a writer. If I look at it as a cheesy movie of the week, I really enjoy it. If I compare it to Kafka, I will lose out. I do really love her books now because someone should be killing off these characters. There is no storyline too outrageous or character besides E & D that can not be sacrificed. I like that about her. I admire the fact that she is out there putting herself on the line.

Of course, I support you too. I can see what you mean and it is true just trying to share how I see it. I am glad I came up with a new way of approaching her work so I could truly love it.

Debbie (dmbrown) | 849 comments Please someone correct me if you know I'm wrong, but I believe I read in a blog that she has a learning disability. Whenever I've reviewed her stuff, I've always tried to be as positive as I can. I admire her putting herself out there, as you say, and I do appreciate her originality. I wish she would find a ghost writer to put it in print for her, though!!!

Nicole Barton Sasser (bartonsasser) | 134 comments Talia wrote: "I adjusted a lot by then to JAFF authors who often are not polished writers"

They use to be! So much trash out there now. Schertz was the first big one that I noticed and still to this day will not read...

I hold all published authors to the same standards. If the writing and errors are so bad they hinder the story and your enjoyment, that is horrible. If you spend your time to publish and then publish subpar work... maybe you should not be a writer... or stick to the fanfiction websites.

It is getting all twisted. The bad are publishing to make money and many greats are sticking to the sites and not publishing.

The ease of self publishing really is a double edged sword.

Just my opinion.

I used to feel like you about this subject but I am glad that I opened myself up to different standards. If I kept them at their original levels, their would be few authors who could meet them. I have had a lot of fun reading things I otherwise would have missed. This group helped me to see that. We all have our own preferences for sure and we all won't agree.

Either way. After 8 years and hundreds of variations later, still good stories out there for me. I just have to sift through and screen more thoroughly :)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 849 comments Nicole, you're probably correct and it was a physical disability rather than a learning disability. My memory is just too fuzzy. It was 2 or 3 years ago when I read about it, I think. Might have been on a Facebook post.

Eliza Baum (elizabaum) | 176 comments Updates!

64. Death Comes to Pemberley - 3 stars
65. George Knightley, Esquire: Charity Envieth Not - 5 stars
66. Unequal Affections: A Pride and Prejudice Retelling - 4 stars (Re-read)
67. Pride and Persistence - 3 stars (Re-Read)

3 out of 4 of these were audiobooks, because I've had less reading time lately and have been reading some non-JAFF. It's too bad there's not more of the self-pubbed stuff available on audio. Eventually I'll have to resort to Lady Kindle to read the books to me, and it's just not the same! Not that that's ever stopped me.... :-)

Happy to see you finished Charity Envieth No Eliza. I'm guessing all of us who did the March group read with Sophia gave it 5 stars. I don't remember seeing even a single negative post about it. Home renovations finished?

Looking good with a few more for the challenge, Eliza!

That's great you were able to snag audio books as an option to keep up your reading. I've actually only listened to PO Dixon's books on audio so I'm not even sure who all has JAFF out on audio yet.

Yes, it was a great book. Very well done, and honestly more enjoyable for me than Emma was. (Blasphemy, perhaps, but *shrug*)

Home renovations are mostly done for now, thank goodness. Got a few finishing touches left, but they can wait. :-)

I've enjoyed Abigail Reynolds on audio (except one where I hated the narrator...but I can't for the life of me remember which one). Once I had bought enough of those on audible, it started prompting me with others I'd enjoy--which is how I've found most of them. I'm rereading Rumours & Recklessness: A Pride and Prejudice Variation right now, just because I saw there was audio available, and the narrator is fantastic. I wish there were more, though. It's nice to be able to read something even when work and home are crazy.
