I can not remember either the author or title(despite doing a book review on it!). However I was about 9 at the time and am 41 now! So, it was in the 80's.
From what I can remember, the story was about a young boy who befriended a ghost and a graveyard featured frequently in the story.

Is it possible that it featured a young girl instead of a young boy? In Mary Downing Hahn's Wait Till Helen Comes, the narrator moves to an old church and is somewhat terrified of the graveyard in their new backyard. Her younger stepsister befriends a ghost who begins to make their lives miserable. It was first published in 1985, so that just about lines up with what you remember.

Johnny and the Dead by Terry Pratchett has a boy befriending ghosts (plural) and a graveyard.

Although it was published more recently, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman also has that as a plot.
