Due to Amazon's policy change regarding how series books are listed on their site, I have changed the numbers on the two most recent books in my Jackson Falls Series. The Next Little Thing, previously Book 3.5, is now Book 4. Redemption Road, previously Book 4, is now Book 5. I have updated covers for both, which can be added to Goodreads, but I'm not sure how to proceed. Should I call them alternative cover editions and then combine with the previous version? Or do they need to be listed as completely separate books, when in reality they're not? Help!

Oh, and I learned my lesson. There will be no more .5 books!

yes, that would be the correct action. We keep edition as separate books when the content is different, a change of cover and series number doesn't count as change in content. But when combining you should combine the knew book 4 with book 3.5.
When you do that you can set the new covers as default edition.

Goodreads series has nothing to do with Amazon. Do you wish to preserve the old order on Godreads or should we reorder the books?

We usually mark books as 3.5 when they are short stories and novellas and the whole series can be rad without that book.

I'm not sure what Amazon's policy has been or what it was changed to. I can tell you that, unless I have missed a change in Goodreads policy, novellas within a larger series such as this have always used a .5 designation. Short stories usually have a .1, .2, etc. designation if there are multiple shorts between full length novels.

I'm hoping Rivka will comment on this. In the meantime, I am going to go look up the Goodreads policy for novellas within a series and see if there has been a change.

As for the actual covers, they would be created as alternate cover editions and combined with the existing works.

And that change will make our life so much easier! Now we gonna have 'Series in order' and 'Series in "Amazon" order'. Hope not!

Here's what happened: A few days ago, I received an e-mail from Amazon stating that they have changed their policy on listings of series books. They want all series books to be listed in a specific manner, with volume numbers. They flagged my novella, The Next Little Thing, as not conforming to the new standard and asked me to correct it. It didn't conform because when I first published it via Kindle Direct Publishing, the "volume" field in the listing form would not accept a .5 number. I kept getting an error message, stating that it was not a real number. So I left that field blank, and stated in the book's description that it was Book 3.5. I was able to publish it this way with no problem. Now, Amazon is asking that the "volume" field be filled in on all series books. Since the form will still not accept "3.5" as a real number, I chose to renumber the novella to Book 4, which meant I also had to renumber Book 4 to Book 5.

I'm not familiar with Goodreads policy re: listing series books, but if a book is listed at Amazon as Book #4, or #5, wouldn't Goodreads list it as the same number to avoid confusion?

Since I'm not 100% sure, I won't take any action right now, but will wait for confirmation. Thanks!

Thanks! Have to think this over before I do anything.

Is it possible you are misunderstanding. I don't think they can expect authors to change their book covers so they fit some Amazon criteria.

Also whatever their rules what is important is your cover.

Correct.

Monique (kadiya) | 1097 comments Laurie,

What I think we should do is this:

Create alternate cover editions for 3.5/4 and 4/5 and combine them with the current editions.

Add a notation in the series listing about the numbers and add a notation in the descriptions with the new covers regarding the numbers.

Leave the series numbering as it currently is, with 3.5 for the novella and 4 for the following novel.

You can set the new cover editions as primary if you prefer.

Thanks, that's what I'll do.

Just to clarify, they didn't ask me to change the cover. They simply pointed out that the novella didn't appear to conform to the specified format, and asked me to fix the problem (I suspect that a bot spotted it and the e-mail was automatically generated). Since their listing form wouldn't take the 3.5 number, it was my decision to renumber the books. I have no idea whether or not I'll write another novella, but decided it would be cleaner and better in the long run to stick to whole numbers. :)
