This sounds familiar to me but I can't remember the name of the author. There is this list, though https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/... I did not see what I had in mine.

You know, I do read Robin McKinley and that title does seem familiar. I won't know for sure until I check out the summaries, though. Now, how to get those summaries?Thanks for the suggestion!

Yay! I loved that book- "A Pool in the Desert" was crazy!
The story of the merman generally went as follows: A human woman and a merman meet under unfortunate circumstances - the human woman almost loses her life through a sea-related incident. After the danger passes, they met every so often at the place where this occurred and eventually end up falling in love. Their love somehow ends the hatred between the land and sea people. A happy ending.
Various details I recall about the story are: The time period in which this occurred was before electricity and horses were a main form of transport. The people were somewhat superstitious, especially about the sea. There was strife between the land and sea people. Anyone land person who dared enter the sea forfeited their life.
(view spoiler)[The human woman was being chased, I think, and fell through a bridge over part of the sea, or maybe someone pissed off the sea king and she offered her life in exchange? The sea king was enraged, but a merman, who had been watching her, asked for her life to be spared.
She was and from then on, the two met on the bridge to learn more about each others' cultures. Eventually they fell in love. The sea people and the land people made peace. Somehow, he gains the ability to live on land, and she, to live in the sea. They had many children who had the ability to either live on land or in the sea. (hide spoiler)]
