Jess What do u think is the best word to describe this book?

i would have to say perfect is the word for me... just like edward. lol

Vettech2124 When I read this i fell in love with Edward! I want someone just like him! Even if he is a vampire! I think that is what makes him so perfect and not just the physical part of him! lol Every girl needs an Edward!

Leslie And nearly every girl wants an Edward!

Jackie Edward really is overrated... (good books, stephenie meyer has got great writing style).. I am just sick of everyone in love with him. Brooding angst? give me a break ladies, that's not the most attractive thing for a guy. If he were a human, you wouldn't look twice at that personality. He's a little overprotective (creepy), and cryptic (annoying at times.) I have to say, I love these books, but the obsession is a little much

Sarah Jones I too think Edward is overrated, Now... Jacob. Him I like. :)

message 6: by JJ (last edited Feb 27, 2008 12:11PM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

JJ What was all the hype about? I read it this weekend and was so dissapointed. At 300 pages (over half of the book), nothing had happened aside from Bella repeatedly mentioning how perfect and beautiful Edward was, and Edward repeatedly mentioning how fragile and clumsy Bella was.

I did like Carlisle and Alice though.

Jodie you guyz r missing the point. btw sarah please don't force me to murder u because jacob is the single most hated person in my life right now. michael, the whole point of the series IS the Bella/Edward relationship. I strongly disagree with the comments about the whole thing just being about Edward being gorgeous and bella being clumsy. If that was what the book was about, it wouldn't be a bestseller that has captivated thousands. I commend you for your courage to swim upstream, and challenge the public opinion, but I have to say I am disappointed by how shallowly you observed the book. Forget about how 'perfect' Edward is for a moment, and just try to imagine their love, try for one moment to embrace Bella's pain, and Edward's complete devotion. If Edward didn't have some bad characteristics (i.e. control freak + overprotective; i will allow you that much) he would be any other guy. He would actually be unnatural, and not half as endearing. So I encourage you to look past the trivial sections and focus on their love.

Lorajean Funny how their "love" is the part you all dislike about a "love story". Why did you even read it then.

Vettech2124 1) u need to be a girl to understand the obsession of Edward! (he's awesome! boo, Jacob! jacob=total a-hole who is cocky and full of himself) 2) Edward is NOT creepy. Imagine loving someone so much, u had to do anything to keep them safe. Especially Bella, who attracts only drama...and vampires!

Leslie If you don't add in the 'love story' part and the fact that Bella is clearly into Edward, it would just be a creepy, stalker book. Since Bella is obviously into him, he's being protective and considerate.

This is a book that, if you didn't love it within the first 50 pages, you should not waste your time. Not every book is for every person. Also, some books just aren't good at certain times of your schedule. (I personally rearranged my schedule so I could read these when I got them.)

Jodie I agree w/ Leslie. Not all books r for everybody.

lol i also agree w/ Lorajean! this is a love story, and u guyz r like "oo the part i don't like is the love part" if ur not into intense love stories, then why'dya pick it up? read blurbs much? and pleaz guyz, don't ruin the story for people by over-analyzing it. every book has its flaws. u don't need to shove them in people's faces.

message 12: by Saya (last edited Feb 25, 2009 02:34AM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Saya People point out the flaws because they're criticizing the story, people are actually paid to criticize books, movies, and video games- it's a profession that everyone should be able to partake in. Don't look down on people for actually analyzing a book which is what you should do as well as enjoy it.

To Vettech2124: Edward IS creepy because he invaded Bella's privacy by watching her sleep. He removed the spark plugs from her truck to keep her from seeing Jake. He NEVER asks her opinion about anything, he doesn't take her feelings or thoughts into consideration when it comes to the big picture- the entire plot of New Moon and Victoria's first return in Eclipse.

How are we supposed to understand this crazed lust for Edward when you just insult Jake for being human?

Edward is controlling, over protective, and smug, he doesn't take Bella's thoughts or feelings into consideration when it comes to big decisions. Really, Eclipse just killed whatever remaining affection I had for him. Yo genius, if you were in so much pain from being separated from Bella and you're so sorry for hurting her, then why are you still denying Bella vampiric life? Especially with the Volturi, Victoria, and the werewolves all posing threats depending on Bella's changing. Edward was just so selfish and smug I wanted to slap that stupid little smirk off his face... then again I wanted to slap everyone in Eclipse.

Vettech2124 Saya: I agree that everyone has their own opinion and a right to share them. And this is mine. Edward is NOT creepy. For the watching her sleep thing, that's pure curiosity! He's been dead for awhile, I think he has the right to watch and observe a sleeping beauty, especially one who talks while asleep. He only removed the plugs from her car for 2 reasons. And one is not 'cause he's creepy. He did it because he thought he was protecting her and two he didn't want the love of his life near a life-threatening DOG which happens to be his rival. And he does ask her opinion on some stuff, maybe not a lot, but I don't think Bella seems to mind so there's no problem there. Edward does take her feelings and thoughts into consideration! He's a quiet guy so maybe he doesn't say out loud but his actions say it all! At the end of Eclipse he was willing to give into her offer which shows he took it into consideration.
And just an up-date, if anyone is smug, it's Jacob Black! He is so full of himself! Going around telling Bella that she loves him! Ugh! He has no right to tell her who she loves!

April Yes Vettech2124! This is exactlly how I say Edward. But I'm going to regress and go back to the original question. This story is not one of the the great literary books of our time, but having said that this story means more to me than any other I've ever read! Why?? Well I've been trying to figure that one out myself! I think it's because of how Edward treats Bella, how he listens so intently to everything she says. How he stares at her like he's seeing her for the first time every time he sees her!! Who doesn't want someone to love them that much???!!!I know it's pretty cheesy of me, but I can't help it! Edward's love for Bella is really why I love these books. Bella pretty much gets on nerves through most of the books, she's so dumb!!!But she's also young, so I forgive her for that. At least by the end of Eclipse she's got her head on right.

April whoops, I meant saw Edward, not say!!! Sorry!

message 16: by Saya (new) - rated it 2 stars

Saya Most of my anger towards Edward's controlling behavior stems from Bella's stupidity. She can never bring herself to be seriously mad at Edward for leaving her, preventing her from seeing Jake- it doesn't matter who it is Bella wants to see, the point is, is that he is forcibly holding her prisoner and she won't stay mad! Not even when Edward keeps nagging Bella to see her mother and then manipulates Bella into getting so angry with Charlie that she decides to go, despite how upset she is with this, she ends up going anyway and we don't know if she's still upset or just gets over it.

I don't care if he's curious, he's still invading her privacy, okay I can understand your point, truly I do, but as someone who enjoys her privacy just as Bella is supposed to do (with her private mind) I would be at least shocked to hear this. But no, she's flattered (at least she acknowledges that she should feel scared).

Bella is just so passive and selfish yet no one will admit this or even try to TALK TO HER ABOUT IT. Eclipse made me want to punch someone- as it is the character development book with little to no action, I wanted to punch everyone a lot.

I just don't feel Edward and Bella's love. They didn't bond aside from a few mentions of music and of course, Bella herself says that she is irrevocably and unconditionally in love with Edward. After the meadow scene, their in love all the time, besides New Moon of course but even then they were still in love with each other despite what Bella or Edward thought. They NEVER fight, they have long dialogues of disagreements which always end with jokes and kisses. There's no meat. But look at Jake and Bella, they fight, they actually spend time together- with Jake fixing cars and Bella listening to him talk. Jake actually helps Bella positively while Edward has always been bad for her and everyone besides Bella knows and says so.

Jodie To Michael: Ok so I see your point of view. I guess for me it was this weird, unusual relationship that intrigued me so much: that it was possible for them to love each other so much always kinda thrilled me. But I see what ur saying about Edward being 2 perfect... I definitely thought it was strange at the end of Eclipse when he wasn't even mad or anything. I think he should have been a little more human at that point. I definitely think at times he's unnatural, and that some fans go way overboard drooling over him, but at the same time, it's the idea of his redeeming quality being his love for Bella. I really liked that.

ya I see what u mean. Like i wasn't a fan of sci-fi, but i read an amazing sci-fi one day, so i goes to show I guess. If you don't like it, OK. Not all books click w/ everybody. I think that often books are misjudged (both positively and negatively) because the wrong people read them. Not saying that your a wrong person or anything =)

Saya: Professionals often take both sides. They don't narrow-mindedly blow one side way out of proportion. i don't think your the only one guilty of this though--quite a few people love the book way too blindly. But there's a difference between healthily questioning a book, and madly taking the minority on every issue you can. but thx 4 the input. sry if i'm totally overreacting l:E

Vettech2124 If you've ever been in love before, you would know that it is sometimes hard to stay mad, especially when you know they have good intentions. Now imagine that love x5! That's how Bella feels towards Edward and him to her. And frankly, I'm a little annoyed with people saying that Edward and Bella's relationship is too perfect b/c newsflash! It's not! Edward's a fricken vampire! I think that means that their love is not perfect.

Leslie If you take a step back and think about this guy sneaking into a girl's bedroom and listening to her talking in her sleep it is a little creepy, stalkeresque! I loved the books and the story, but it bothers me a little that she's not more disturbed about him having been in her room when she didn't know it. If he'd been a non-vampire and been hanging out under her bedroom window, the police would have been called.

April I see Edward as being so acutly aware of how fragile Bella is that he has the right to be overprotective. I mean in Twillight she almost gets killed 3 times, and that's just the first book. So Edward finally finds some purpose to his excistence, and she almost dies 3 times, he's going to be controlling because he can't loose her. As for the creepiness of Edward, well he drinks blood to stay alive-what could be creepier than that?

Leslie Good point!

message 22: by Whitney (new) - added it

Whitney thank you jackie!!!!!!! i haven't read any of them yet, so i cant say i dont like the book, or that i love edward, or watever. i think its okay to feel really passionate about edward, or to hate him, but dont be like "i love edward" all the time just because every one else does. its SOOOOOO annoying. and i know, ill read the dumb book already!!

Brittany Hmmm sadly I don't think many girls out there will find an Edward, but hey we can all dream right? I think every guy can be an Edward though, sweet, sacrificing, polite.(only mentioning good stuff) but it just depends on how much they show it. Girls are like apples, the very best at the top of the tree and they think they aren't good enough because nobody wants them when really they just need to wait for a guy who is willing to risk falling and getting hurt to get the best apples. (It was a poem, I summarized it.) Anyway, I would describe this book as romantic and thrilling!

Vettech2124 Brittany, I know you wrote this a couple of weeks ago but I didnt really read it until now, srry! But I just wanna say even though you summarized it from a poem, I loved what you said about girls being apples (although it is strange to be compared to an apple). What a great way of looking at things! This may seem strange since I don't know you n all, but if I'm being straight forward... Your comments are very well thought-out and put together! (Told you it sounded weird!) lol

L8r Good Readers!
<3

Carmen This is one of my favorite book series, right under the Chronicles of Narnia. It's hilarious how Bella says certain things. ("I made the Cowardly Lion look like the Terminator.") I love the suspenseful parts, like when James decided to go demolish Bella--James is one of the best villains of all time. If there's any specific character that makes the series better than it is already, that would definitley be Alice. Who doesn't love a quirky psychic shopoholic? If you're looking for a good book, this is the one!

Best word for this series: Awesome.

Liz I don't like Edward very much. The romantic lines make me puke - uggh. And he is way too overprotective of Bella - give her a break. And in Breaking Dawn I really dislike his character - but I won't give anything away for those who haven't read it.
Twilight saga is still very interesting and SM is an okay writer.

Sarah Edward kind of has to be overprotective of Bella. haha, if you think about it. This book is amazing!!
