Joseph (mccannx) Hi all, I am in search of a few blogs that I can follow that are written by people who are funny, witty, a bit cynical, and who regularly post
updates. I figure noone is going to write better blogs than the book junkies who hang out in the shadowy halls of GoodReads. I am hoping to discover blogs from people who wax philosophical, sharing interesting thoughts and reflections. Most of the blogs I found here are straight book reviews... I would like to find some bloggers sharing their musings on life (life, the universe, and everything).
Best, Joe

Eloreen Moon (eloreenmoon) | 19 comments :) There are several out there, depending upon what you are looking for. There is mine and I follow everything, including the kitchen sink. I do have reviews and they are primarily LGBT but I do review and talk about others. Most of the ones I would recommend are also in the LGBT community, so again, depends upon what you would like to follow. Let me know and I will be happy to compile a list.

Please do try mine if you like Joseph - it's a bit random, but you may find something to interest you. I don't post often - about every four to six weeks. http://mikerobbinsnyc.blogspot.com/

Great blog, Mike, resulting in my going off to Amazon to look for your Silvia Guzmán book.

Deborah Camp (deborahcamp) | 43 comments Feel free to try mine. I don't post reviews on it. Mainly reflections about writing and reading. www.Deborah campwritersdesk.blogspot.com

Thank you Sophie!

Judy Goodwin | 187 comments Hmm. I post on a variety of topics, as do most of the writing blogs that I follow. http://judygoodwin.wordpress.com

Have you checked out Neil Gaiman? He's supposed to have a good blog.

I haven't found any truly hilarious ones, but I'll keep my eyes open.

message 13: by Joseph (new)

Joseph (mccannx) Thanks all for the suggestions, I am looking forward to checking out all the blogs! Ashley, I see you are a fan of Gary Paulsen, have you read WinterDance? That is one of my favorites! Will have to read more of your posts...

message 14: by Joseph (new)

Joseph (mccannx) Judy, Thanks for recommendation, your blog looks really interesting! Also I am a huge fantasy fan, and your trailer for your book Journey to Landaran is fantastic. If I ever get any free time I would like to check out the book... right now I am working full time and taking a master's program at night (done in Oct!)... I saw your review on City of Ashes, I am about half way through the book... and I am of the opinion that Cassandra Clare is one of the most entertaining authors writing now, so once I am done I will post to your blog. I do think it very funny that she named the main character after herself (I bet Cassandra's nickname is Clary). I look forward to reading more of your reviews! All the best, Joe

Martyn Halm (amsterdamassassinseries) | 248 comments Follow Mike Robbins' blog.

Don't follow mine. I'm not funny or witty, I've eaten too many butterflies to be cynical, and I don't have a life.

Oh, I don't know Martyn. Anyway, you're an expert on contract killing, and I'm not much good at that!

Martyn Halm (amsterdamassassinseries) | 248 comments Mike wrote: "Oh, I don't know Martyn. Anyway, you're an expert on contract killing, and I'm not much good at that!"

I told you, Mike. Get a contract first. If you just start killing people, nobody will pay. And make sure you're paid in advance. Collecting afterward can be a real bitch.

message 20: by Mike (new)

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 62 comments Tell me about it. I tried killing defaulting clients, but they pay even slower when they're dead too.

message 21: by Martyn (new)

Martyn Halm (amsterdamassassinseries) | 248 comments You better start killing them in increments. Give them some hope they might get out of their precarious situation alive if only they pay up...

message 22: by Mike (new)

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 62 comments I did try making them watch Justin Bieber videos, but that killed them too quickly.

Martyn Halm (amsterdamassassinseries) | 248 comments Mike wrote: "I did try making them watch Justin Bieber videos, but that killed them too quickly."

You have to work it up slowly. First you start with Status Quo ad nauseam, then you move on to Milli Vanilli and only then do you deliver the coup de grace.

Jeez, it's like you don't know anything about killing...

message 24: by Mike (new)

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 62 comments I think it's the poor quality of the clients, Martyn. It must have been the special offer I did - you know, the 2 deaths for the price of 1 with the Aldi coupon.

message 25: by Martyn (new)

Martyn Halm (amsterdamassassinseries) | 248 comments Doesn't pay to go cheap, Mike. You have to make them feel the value of a human life. Otherwise you'll be killing for peanuts. That's for the 'sicarios', not for the professionals.

Like Creaux says in Reprobate: A Katla Novel, “The world is overrun by amateurs, but bereft of professionals.”

I also went to Ecuador for 3 months...in January 2010. So I read your blog with interest. I am new to all this and am about to start a blog and hate all the technical stuff!

If you are using Blogger, it is fairly straightforward but some of the formatting can go a bit weird. If you run into any problems, I'll try and advise. Good luck!

I've had a nonfiction blog up for a couple of years, science (silly me, I figure I know how to solve the effects of global warming, and even did an experiment to prove my hyposthesis...not that anyone listens!); http://jlknapp505.com
I've also got a writing blog that's devoted to fiction, and I have no objection to crossposting some of your commentary. It's fairly new, mostly about writing (my take, of course!) and even excerpts. That's found at http://jacklknapp.com
AS for snark and such, I do most of that on Facebook! Look for Jack Knapp.
Sometimes I'm serious.

Bronwen Griffiths | 9 comments Thanks Jack. Marketing....yes, that's hard when you are new to it and I can't say I like it very much. My new book is out - actually why do I say new when it's the first one?- if you are interested the link is here:

I doubt any of us like marketing. I'd rather be writing.
But we all have the choice: write for our own amusement, or write for others to read. Even this small reply, it's written for those on this forum to read.
And the logic is inexorable; if you want them to read you, they've got to be able to find you, and your writing must gain attention.
Enter marketing. If you're writing for print publishers, the brand itself does some of that. I personally have enjoyed reading books published by Baen. John W Campbell had a similar 'brand name' when he was the editor of Astounding.
But you and I have no brand name. We're indie, beginners, even raw beginners. A bestselling author can write and his lesser works will still sell; but like making rabbit stew (first, catch one rabbit) you have to write AND SELL that first bestseller.
Marketing. I don't like it, but I recognize the necessity if I expect my books to be read.

message 32: by Bronwen (new)

Bronwen Griffiths | 9 comments I agree absolutely, Jack. Marketing has to be done. I'm doing the Goodreads 'giveaway' and making some inroads with the local press...but I'm not having any luck with even local radio - let alone national. However I will keep plugging away!

I'm trying the Kindle Select option, their Countdown Deal; so far it's generating some activity. I'll have a better idea by the end of the week how effective it is.
Rethinking the 'giveaway' option; you don't make a profit, but you get readers (maybe!) and eventually maybe even followers.

If you publish on Nook, D2D sent me an email today about a change; you can now offer your Nook ebook free. Whether you can offer a reduced price, I don't know.
The Select program apparently sold 14 books at .99, plus two other books sold at full price; whether the two are linked I don't know.
I think Kobo offers a 'daily deal', or perhaps that's Nook too. It's worth looking into. I'll go that route next, see what happens.

I've just done something new, featured a guest author whose writing I admire. http://jacklknapp.com
The featured writer is Bruce Bretthauer. Unusually, his main characters are female, and in the blog post, Bruce explains why and how he developed the Families series.

My blog for my book is written in the voice of one of its characters- a singing white hores. I`ve only just started it but as the horse is very wise and philosopical. http://princeusabandroger.wordpress.com/

If anyone has any wise horsey quote...?
