Hey guys. I am a complete rookie to Sandersons work. I am a huge Tolkien fan and haven't REALLY committed myself to any other fantasy series besides his. I want to change that.
I've heard great things about Sanderson and I picked up Way of Kings for 5 bucks.
I'm wondering if I can dive right into it or if I need to get familiar with his style. Try Mistborn first?
How does Mistborn compare/differ from Way of Kings?
Usually, I'd say go with Mistborn first, but heck, I started with Way of Kings myself, and that's probably a bit more Tolkien-esque than Mistborn is. (I say, a "bit more".)
MISTBORN is what hooked me but Way of Kings is a fantastic read! I had to take a break in the middle because it's very dense and probably my first true 'epic' read, but as a seasoned Tolkien fan, I think you'll be fine. I just finished Words of Radiance which was outstanding. I couldn't put it down, and I'll be rereading both before book 3. I wish I would've reread WoK before WoR.
I read mistborn and his other books before I read the way of kings which was nice because the stormlight archive incorporates the cosmere a lot more than the the other books. The are little things from the other books. They are not important for the plot but are really fun if you catch them.
I read the Mistborn series first them moved onto Elantris, WOK, Warbreaker, Emperor's Soul, Alloy of Law, Steelheart and now 2/3 the way through Words of Radiance.
I read Mistborn last actually. I started with Elantris and fell in love while reading WoK. Warbreaker is my favorite Sanderson book outside of the SA books.
Audible gave away Legion as a free title so I tried it and loved the original idea Sanderson came up with for that short story. I had never heard of him before but because of Legion I went on to read the Mystborn series and pretty much every book Sanderson has written. I've enjoyed them all. You can't go wrong beginning with Mystborn and then moving on to other series he's written.
