Glad to have you in the challenge, Janet.

Janet (goodreadscomjanetj) | 852 comments Thanks. Love this challenge. Took me a couple of days to figure out new books I could use out of my TBR list. I had already chosen based on last year's list. I only had to add a couple of new books to my list after some resorting.

Janet (goodreadscomjanetj) | 852 comments My short story selection might be controversial but this is my reasoning. According to wikipedia "The book is structured as a series of loosely connected vignettes. Burroughs stated that the chapters are intended to be read in any order"

Nice to have a working list for this. I have one as well. As usual, you have a number of my favorites and a number that I have never heard of. I'll be excited to see how you like them all.

message 6: by Janet (new)

Janet (goodreadscomjanetj) | 852 comments I have completed my tentative list. With the exception of "Naked Lunch" they should all be non-controversial(in every sense of the word since the book itself is rather controversial).

Janet (goodreadscomjanetj) | 852 comments I have now completed several level one Bingos and level two Bingo. Blackout is two books away.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1791 comments Way to go, Janet!

I still have one book left, before I blackout my board.

Bravo, Janet.

Janet (goodreadscomjanetj) | 852 comments Completed blackout! My favorite book was Cry, the Beloved Country.

Laurie | 1656 comments Yea, Janet! Congratulations on finishing. That is a great accomplishment. I checked out your list and you have several with 4 or 5 stars. I am impressed that you gave Absalom, Absalom! 5 stars as I really struggled with it. I have Cry, the Beloved Country on my TBR, so I look forward to reading it. Well done on your blackout.

I find that with Faulkner it really helps to refer to Sparknotes. I did it with The Sound and the Fury as well(that one was even more difficult so I read a section, read Sparknotes and reread the section). It really does enhance my appreciation of these books.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1791 comments Janet,

I tried "The Sound and the Fury" and ended up CNFing it.

Perhaps I'll try reading it again and follow your strategy of consulting sparknotes.

I felt bad about giving up on that particular book.

message 24: by Laurie (new)

Laurie | 1656 comments I read The Sound and the Fury in an American Lit class in college, and I remember very little about it. I have it in a personal 20th century classic challenge so I may have to use your strategy when I tackle it again.

Chris | 235 comments Congrats on Blackout Janet. The Sound and the Fury was a pick for me too this year. I absolutely hated reading it and loathed picking it up. It does reward you in the end though and I consulted the sparksnotes for it when I was done as well. Very much worth the effort but leaves you exhausted :)
